August 30, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Plate Match Report

25 Guns Entered    Match won by Lee Lewis, shooting a NightHawk
       2nd Place - George Flaherty, shooting a Smith & Wesson 1911
3rd Place - James Austin, shooting a Smith & Wesson Scofield Single Action Army

Good evening Ladies & Gentlemen, and welcome back to another great plate match at Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club.  This match is out of synch for our normal match schedule, and is a replacement for a scheduled match that fell on a Holiday Monday and had to be cancelled.  We'll get back to our normal 1st and 3rd Monday schedule on the 20th of September.  Next Monday, when the match would normally  be held, falls on Labor Day, and has to be cancelled again.  Stay in touch to see about future makeup dates for Monday's match.

Many thanks go to a lot of people for putting on this match tonight.  Thanks to our Match Director, Mike Blondin, for hosting and directing the match.  There is a lot of organizational skill necessary to make one of these matches work, and Mike is making it happen.  Granted, he has a lot of help.
Thanks go to George Flaherty for runnng the board, the mike, and shuffling and dealing the duels.  As anyone who has ever done that job can confirm, the scoretable can be a busy place.  Speaking of busy places, many thanks go to all who stepped up to run the firing line and make sure the duels all went smoothly and safely.  And many thanks to the set-up Crew who had the stage ready and ready to rock by the match startime of 6:00PM.  By virtue of everyone working together, we were able to get in 4 Rounds of preliminaries and a Sudden Death Final, even with this large of a crowd.

25 Guns contested the event tonight, and toward the end of the Sudden Death Final, the number was reduced to 7.  lee Lewis dueled with this reporter, Hal Hansen and Lee's Predatory NightHawk just barely got to the popper first.  Exit Hal.  James & George dueled next, James' Single Action Army Scofield Revolver against George's ultra modern Smith & Wesson 1911.  Both of these firearms are, or were, made by Smith & Wesson, just about 100yrs apart.  In this duel though, ultra modern was victorious over tried and true, and George emerged the victor.  Don't worry though, James still has 2 more numbers left on the board.
Now Loren DeShon duels with Lee Lewis.  By now, Loren had put his Single Action Buntline to bed, and was back using his "Carry" gun, his H&K P-7 Flight Deck Special.  Loren by now had but 1 number on the board, whereas Lee had many.  In this duel however, 1 number was enough, and Loren carried it forward to his next challenge.  George drew a duel with James next, again a battle of the old and the new, and once again new & modern took the duel.  Duel to George, and James and his ancient Smith & Wesson Scofield Single Action Army Revolver climbed the steps to the trailer and retired for the night.
Now, Lee Lewis, with a bunch of numbers on the board, challenged Loren DeShon, who had but one.  Lee's Predatory NightHawk outran Loren's "Flight Deck Special" H&K P-7, and retired Loren to join the rest of the retired guns on the trailer.
George & James find themselves on the firing line again, and while George has 3 numbers, James has only 1.  On this night, in this duel, 1 number is just not enough, and George's 1911 outruns James' Single Action Army to the finish line.  Exit James Austin.
So, here we are.  We are down to 2 guns left contesting the match victory, George Flaherty with 3 numbers, and Lee Lewis with 1.  Lee, I hope that NightHawk is fast and hungry this late in the match.  In the first duel, George & Lee are loaded and ready!
The horn squawks!  The thunder rolls, 4 plates fall and the poppers.  When quiet returns to the range, Lee's popper rests tight to the ground, and the score now is George 2 to Lee's 1.  And Again!!
The Line Marshall calls for the shooters to Load & Make Ready!  The shooters are ready, and again the horn squawks!
Again thunder rolls, & we hear the rattle of falling plates, the poppers slam to the ground, and once again, Lee Lewis' popper lies on the bottom.  Score now:  George & Lee are tied at 1.  The next duel will decide the winner.  Does anyone imagine that Lee can hold off George for 3 straight duels?  Well, we are about to find out!!

Once again the Line Marshall calls the action.  Shooters, load & make ready!  Shooters ready?  Stand By!!  This time, when the starter horn SQUAWKS, George & Lee engage the plates which fall with a clatter.  They engage the poppers which fall with a louder clatter, and when the gallery strains to see the results, once again Lee Lewis' popper lies tight to the ground, and once again George Flaherty's popper lies on top.  As has been said before, in a plate match is not the time to come out on top!!  Duel to Lee Lewis and his predatory NightHawk!  Second place in tonight's match goes to George Flaherty, and 3rd place goes to James Austin.

OK folks, that's it for this match.  We'll see you all again right here next on Monday September 20, 2010 at 6:00PM.
In the meantime, practice a lot, practice properly, and remember your priorities.  SAFETY WITH FIREARMS FIRST!!
2nd is accuracy!!  When those requirements are firmly engrained, then and only then does one worry about SPEED!

Or, put another way:  SHOOT FAST!  SHOOT ACCURATELY!!  BUT MOST OF ALL, SHOOT

                                                                        SAFELY!!

August 23, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Clays Match Report

16 Guns Entered

7 Open Guns  --  Class won by Ken Bagley Sr. with a score of 46
2nd Open --  Tim Kopp with a score of 35
3rd Open  --  Paul Ries  with a score of 20

9 Limited Guns  --  Class won by Hal Hansen with a score of 45
2nd Limited  --  Jim Skedd with a score of 43
3rd Limited  --  Chuck Treat with a score of 42

Welcome back one and all to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club and another edition of our weekly Clays Match.  August is almost at an end, and the weather is a bit cooler with a heavy overcast, portending the arrival of Fall.   Actually, after the heat we've had of late, the 62degree temperature felt pretty good.

Many thanks to our Match Staff for bringing us another in a long series of great matches.  Thanks to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus, our Scorekeeper & DJ Doug McLean, and our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, for bringing us Page 4 of the
Great Equalizer Series.  16 Guns entered the fray, so let's take a vicarious look at what they saw on Page 4.

Round 1
For the Limited Class entries, a box of 4 Green Standards appeared on each end of the screens.  In a straight line running right through the Green Boxes, 4 orange micros followed a straight line leading to the center of the screen, where the black micro in the middle awaited the attentions of those skillful shooters who were successful in breaking all of their primaries.

Round 2
While still comprised of 4 Green Standards and 4 orange micros, the Green Standard at the 1 OClock position of the box on the left side of the screen, and the one at the 11 OClock position on the right side of the screen, both interspersed the line of orange micros disecting the boxes in Round 1.  3 orange micros have formed a cap over the 5 & 7 oclock Green Standards and the two patterns both border and protect the black micro in the middle.  No matter the actual dispersion of the various clays, if you are entered in the Open Class, pick out your 4 orange micros, or your 4 Green Standards if contesting the Limited Class, break them all, then engage and attempt to break the black micro in the middle.

Round 3
Now, the 4 Green Standards form a rough arrowhead pointing toward the center of the screen.  The 4 orange micros are now pointing toward the outside of the screen, in a reverse arrowhead.  The trick is to determine the best line to engage your appropriate clays in order to use the least time and motion to accomplish your task, namely, breaking all you primaries enabling you to proceed to the center of the screen and engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 4
Using, and abusing, one's imagination, one can almost picture the 4 Green Standards forming the shape of a handgun, with the stock dropping down and three green standards forming a barrel.  The 4 orange micros are all clustered around the "action" of the pistol, like dust off the priming pan of an old flintlock.  If you are shooting in the Open Class, you are going to have to establish a route through the four orange micros, if entered in the Limited Class, hit the outside lower Green Standard, then follow the line of Green Standards that lead right to the black micro in the middle.  Now, it's on to Round 5.

Round 5
The Green Standards are all lined up now, with the 4 orange micros forming a box around the #2 Green Standard, looking from the outside to the inside.  The finess required is now directed to the orange micros, but the Limited Class entrant can simply walk his rounds along the line of Green Standards enroute to the black micro in the middle.  Well, now we have some winners, some that placed, and some that Showed.  Let's learn who's who...........

In the Open Class, Ken Bagley Sr. took the honors with a score of 46, the high score for the match.  2nd Open went to Tim Kopp with a score of 35.  Paul Ries took 3rd Open with a score of 20.  Congrats to our Open Class winners.

In the Limited Class today, this reporter, Hal Hansen, led the way with a score of 45.  2nd Limited went to Jim Skedd with a score of 43.  Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat,  took 3rd Limited with a score today of 42.  Again, congratulatons to the winners of the Limited ClassAnd congratulations to all of our match entrants today for a challenging and especially, A Safe Match.

OK folks, that's the action for today.  Join us right here Monday evening, August 30 at 6PM for our make-up Plate Match,
and of course, right here next Sunday afternoon for another Clays Match.  In the meantime, practice a lot, practice with the proper fundamentals and techniques,  and we'll see you right here next week when we play this game again.  In the meantime, always remember:

"SHOOT FAST!  SHOOT ACCURATELY!!  BUT MOST OF ALL, SHOOT SAFELY!!!"

Good afternoon, Ladies & Gentlemen, and welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club and another mid-summer Clays match.  It's a bit cooler today, with an overcast sky and temperatures in the mid sixties.  Many thanks today to our Match Staff
for bringing us this match.  Thanks to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus for hosting and directing the match.  Thanks to our Scorekeeper and DJ, Doug McLean for officiating the event, and thanks to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat for bringing us
Page 3 of The Great Equalizer Series.

Let's take a look at what our Clays Match Competitors saw today.

Round 1
The Top Row saw a Green Standard, followed by an orange micro, with the pairing repeated.  The bottom row saw the same pattern.  If you are entered in the Open Class, you engage the orange micros.  If entered in the Limited Class, you engage the Green Standards.  In either case, IF you are successful in breaking your primaries, you engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 2
We see the same pattern, but with both the top and bottom rows beginning with the orange micros, followed by the Green Standards, with the pairing then repeated.  The black micro in the middle awaits those successful in breaking all of their primaries.

Round 3
Now the 4 Green Standards form a Square, corralling the 4 orange micros which are configured in the shape of a diamond.
As always, the black micro in the middle awaits those successful in breaking all of their primaries.

Round 4
Now the 4 Green Standards, still configured in the shape of a square, are actually surrounded by the 4 orange micros, still in the shape of a diamond, but now interspersed with and bracketing the Standards.  The black micro in the middle is well protected, but still in the middle.  Break all of your primaries and then engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 5
Now the 4 orange micros and the 4 Green Standards both assume the general shape of arrowheads, pointing toward the
black micro in the middle.  So let's see who won what today.

In the Ladies Class, Ariel Kimura, back from Southern California and visiting her Nephew Mark Kimura, decided that since she was visiting anyway, she may as well take home a winner's medallion from the Ladies Class at GHSC's Clays Match.  Ariel & Carrie
Morton shot tie scores of 30.  Now here's a novelty, we're going to have a Powder Puff shootoff
Ariel was contesting the Open Class, with a Ruger Mark III .22 cal pistol with a red dot optic.  Carrie Morton had her Model 19 Glock.  The screens stayed at 10 yds, but only the objective clays for each Ladies Class stayed on the screen.  Ariel was shooting in the Open Class, so she saw only Orange Micros, while Carrie was contesting the Limited Class, so she saw only Green Standards.  Our Scorekeeper and DJ, Doug McLean makes the call.  Shooters to the line, load 5 rounds!  Shooters Ready?  FIRE!!  Ariel walked her Ruger Mk III across the Orange micros and the black micro in the middle quickly and accurately.  Carrie Morton had apparently peaked for the day already, as she shot at her Green Standards and just couldn't make contact.  Hey Carrie.  "It Happens".  Just forget about this one, and carry on.  Try it again next week.  Ariel Kimura takes the win in the Ladies Class today, and Congratulations to ya, kid.  I'll bet the politicians in the "Peoples Republic of California" would be surprised that you remember so much about shooting from the last time you were here.  "The Terminator" will be watching you closely.

In the Open Class, our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus pulled out a win with a score of 44.  Chuck, you haven't been in the winner's circle for awhile.  Welcome Back!!  2nd Open was won by Herb Shahan with a score of 35.  3rd Open today went to our Junior Clays Shooter, Brian Tinner, with a score of 34.  Congratulations to all of you.

In the limited Class, Jim Skedd shot the high score for the day with a 45!!  Jim's Predatory NightHawk squeaked in ahead of
Mark Wuesthoff, and his brand new Smith & Wesson Revolver by 1 solitary point, giving Mark a score of 44.  Sharing a tie for 3rd Limited, both with scores of 38 were this reporter, Hal Hansen and his Kimber, and Jay Schoonmaker with his Single Action Army Revolver with rounds about the size of his thumb.  Congratulations to all of todays Clays Match Competitors for a safe, fun match.

     OK Folks, that's it for today.  We'll see you all right here next Sunday and we'll play the game again.  In the meantime, practice a lot, properly!!  Keep in mind when you are thinking about what it takes to win a clays match;

"SPEED IS FINE, BUT ACCURACY IS FINAL!!"

August 16, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Plate Match

15 Guns Entered     Match Won by Loren DeShon

      2nd Overall - Hal Hansen
      3rd Overall - Paul Ries

Good evening Ladies & Gentlemen, and welcome back to another HOT Summer evening at Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club.  Our plate match tonight was blessed by clear Blue skies, and temperatures in the middle to upper 80s.  This reporter remembers last winter saying that "I won't be happy until I see mirage floating off of the plates."  It is currently just about to that point, and indeed, it is Hot Enough!!

15 Guns turned out for tonight's match, and the shooting was just about as HOT!! as the August Temperatures.  Many thanks to Mathew Seagraves & Dylan Hasselhuhn for setting up the stage.  Thanks to Loren DeShon for running the line tonight, with help from Paul Ries.
Thanks to Mike Blondin for Directing  the Match tonight and running the scoreboard.  Thanks to our Token Lady, Helen TodHunter for playing recording Secretary so this reporter could tend to the shooting end of the game.  With all this excellent help and direction, we got in 5 Rounds of preliminaries and a Sudden Death Finale.  The match moved so smoothly we were done and packed up by shortly after 8pm.

The match started off with 15 Guns entered, and by the end of the Sudden Death Finale,
we were down to just 3;  Loren DeShon, Hal Hansen & Paul Ries.  Loren had a lot of numbers on the board, while Paul & Hal were simply trying to safeguard what few they had.
The finale started with a duel between Loren & Hal with Loren winning this one.  Loren then put Kong on the trailer setting the stage for a duel between Hal & Paul.  Hal took this one, and then drew Paul again, with the same result.  Paul then drew a duel with Loren, beating him to the wire for one of Loren's few losses tonight.  Thanks a lot, Paul, for getting Loren all riled up, because Loren then pulled out consequtive wins over both Hal & Paul, back to back.  This put Hal up to the line against Loren again, with a much more positive outcome for Hal.  In this extremely close duel, Hal's .40SW bullet pushed the popper over before Loren's 9mm bullet could do the job, by sheer Power Factor.  It was that close.
Loren then drew another duel with Paul, winning it and putting Paul Ries on the trailer with a 3rd Place Finish firmly tucked away.  Not bad Paul.  At this point, Loren apparently heard his wife calling him to dinner, because in two back to back duels, Loren put Hal on the trailer, and walked away with the Match Win.  Hal took 2nd Overall.

So that's the story from Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club tonight.  You Plate Shooters Listen Up Now!!   In Two Weeks, August 30, 2010, We will have a makeup match right here to make up for the match we missed with the last Holiday.  So BE HERE August 30, 2010 at
6PM and we'll enjoy another match in August

Until then, practice a lot, keep your gear in good shape, and remember your fundamentals.
Safety 1st & Last - Then Accuracy  -  and only after those priorities are satisfied do you worry about Speed!!  It was a beautiful hot night tonight, and summer isn't anywhere near over yet.
We'll enjoy it right here in 2 weeks and the week after as well.  Until then always remember,

"SPEED IS FINE, BUT ACCURACY IS FINAL!!!!"

8/15/10 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Clays Match Report

8 Guns Entered

2 Open, Class won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 45
2nd Open, Ken Bagley Sr with a score of 42

6 Limited, Class won by Chuck Treat with a score of 43
Tied for 2nd Limited, both with scores of 36
                Hal Hansen
                Craig Tabor
3rd Limited, Mark (OJ) Kimura with a score of 34

Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club on this HOT!! August Summer afternoon.  The sky was a clear blue, and the temperature in the range building was 88degrees8 brave souls decided the weather was perfect!! for a clays match, and enjoyed hammering page 2 of The Great Equalizer Series.  Thanks to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat for bringing us the stage.  Thanks also to Doug Mclean for taking Chuck Nicodemus' place today as Match Director, as well doing his usual excellent
job of scorekeeping and calling the action throughout the match.   We've seen it before, but let's do a quick review of Page 2
and shoot the match vicariously.

Round 1
We start off looking at the top row of 4 orange micros all in a row.  The bottom row had the same arrangement of Green Standards.  If you are entered in the Open Class your targets are the orange micros.  If you are trying your luck in the Limited Class, it's the Green Standards.  In either case, IF, and only IF you break all your primaries, you then engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 2
In this array, we find one of the Green Standards has moved up to the top row, to be replaced on the bottom row by an orange micro.  If you have broken all of your primaries, engage the black micro in the middle.  Then it is on to Round 3.

Round 3
Now both the middle Green Standards are on the top row, and two are on the bottom row.  Two orange micros have migrated to the bottom row and strategy has become a factor in the match;  finding the fastest way to the black micro in the middle.

Round 4
The top row now finds orange micros alternating with Green Standards.  The same can be said for the bottom row, but in equal and opposite order.  Skipping along from target to target and from row to row, break your primaries and head for the black micro in the middle.  And now, it's Round 5.

Round 5
X Marks The Spot!!  From the top left to the bottom right we have 4 Green Standards.  From the bottom left to the top right we
have 4 orange micros.  IF you have broken your primaries, you then head to the middle of the screen in search of the black micro in the middle.  Let's now see who did what in today's match.

The Open Class was won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 45.  2nd Open was taken by Ken Bagley Sr. with a score of 42.

The Limited Class was won by our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, who shot a score of 43.  We had a tie for 2nd Limited between Hal Hansen and Craig Tabor.  Both Hal & Craig shot scores of 36.  We haven't seen Craig Tabor for a long time.  I guess he had to come and share in Hal's mediocrity today.  Coming in 3rd in the Limited Class was Mark (OJ) Kimura with a score of 34.

Next Sunday have another Clays Match, right here at Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club.  Remember the GHSC Plate Match Monday August 16, 2010 at 6PM.  Practice proper technique, practice firearms safety, and when you have those skills well and truly in hand, then focus on Speed!!  We'll see you all at the range, and while preparing for the matches always remember

"YOU CANNOT MISS FAST ENOUGH TO WIN!!!!"

August 8, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Clays Match Report

14 Guns Entered

3 Ladies shooting today - Class won by Gitti Anable with a score of 30
2nd Lady - Carrie Morton with a score of 18
3rd Lady - Lisa Wray with a score of 15

2 Open Guns - Class won by Ken Bagley Sr. with a score of 45
2nd Open won by David Lee with a score of 39

12 Limited Guns Entered - Class won by Mark Wuesthoff with a score of 40 + 2
        2nd Limited - Hal Hansen with a score of 40 + 1
3rd Limited - Mark (OJ) Kimura with a score of 39

Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club for our Sunday Clays Match.  Many thanks to our match staff today.  Doug McLean pulled double duty, acting as Match Director in Chuck Nicodemus' absence, while doing his usual gig as DJ and & Scorekeeper.  Thanks to our Arrays Impressario for bringing us a modified version of Page 1 of The Great Equalizer Series.
In an ongoing effort to keep the field guessing, and not becoming complacent with familiarity, Chuck modified the script a bit today.
Page 1, Round 1 was shot twice.  Then Page 1, Round 3 was shot twice, followed by engaging Page 1, Round 5 once for a total of 5 Rounds.  Let's take a look at what the field saw today.

     Rounds 1 & 2

4 orange micros on the top row, and 4 Orange Standards on the bottom row.  You know the drill.  If you are shooting in the Open Class, you engage and attempt to break the orange micros.  If you are shooting in the Limited Class, you engage the Orange Standards.  When you have broken all four of your primary clays, then you go to the middle of the screen and engage the
black micro in the middle.

     Rounds 3 & 4

Now we're looking at 3 orange micros followed by an Orange Standard on the top row.  On the bottom row we have 3 orange Standards followed by an orange micro.  IF you break all your primaries, you go to the middle of the screen and engage the black micro in the middle.

    Round 5

On the top row we see an Orange Standard followed by 2 orange micros and then another Orange Standard.
On the bottom row, an orange micro leads the way, followed by 2 Orange Standards, and finally 1 more orange micro.
If successful in engaging and breaking your primaries, advance to the black micro in the middle.  Let's see the results of our efforts today.

We had 3 Ladies competing today, including a new lady, Lisa Wray.  Welcome Lisa.  We hope you had a good time and will return just as often as possible.  Lisa shot a score of 15 today, just getting edged out by Carrie Morton with a score of 16.  Giti Anable showed the way to the winner's circle today with a score of 30.  Good shootin' Ladies.

We had but 2 entries in the Open Class today.  Ken Bagley Sr. had the winning Open Class score with 45.  David Lee finished 2nd Open with a score of 39.  Close David, but no cigar.

In the Limited Class, at the end of regulation play we had a tie between Mark Wuesthoff & Hal Hansen, both with scores of 40.  We're gonna have a Shootoff!!  The screens stayed at 10yds, but at this point our Arrays Impressario declared loudly:
"No More Mister Nice Guy" !!  Mark & Hal were looking at, and trying to see, 4 black micros all in a row on each side of One (1) orange micro in the middle.  At this point the contest was between Mark & Hal against the Course designer.  By now the ambient light had faded, and while the orange micro stood out ok, the black micros were mostly deliniated by the clothespins.  Our DJ, Doug McLean called the action.  Shooters to the line, load 5 rounds.  Shooters Ready?  FIRE!!
Mark & Hal, mostly shooting at shadows, engaged the clays, took their best shots and when the thunder ebbed, Mark Wuesthoff had hit 2 of the black micros, and Hal felt lucky to get 1.  I think next time this reporter gets in a shootoff, I'll have a weapon mounted FlashLight!!  3rd Place in the Limited Class was won by Mark (OJ) Kimura with a score of 39.  Hey Mark!!
If you had hit one more clay, you could have shot at shadows too!!  It looks to me as though the Course Designer won this shootoff by a score of 6 to 3.

OK folks.  That's it for this week.  We'll see you all right here next Sunday and we'll play the game again.  Until then, drive safely,  we want to shoot with you, not read about you.  Practice a lot and practice properly.  Always bear in mind your techniques and safety protocols when shooting.  Bear in mind a basic truth to execution of firearm fundamentals:

"PRACTICE ONLY MAKES PERMANENT.  PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT"!!

This Week's Clays and Plate Match Reports

Appartently this week's "Hot August Nights" required most everyone to be elswhere.  Only 4 people showed up for the clays match Sunday and also an insufficient number for Monday's Plate Match.  The matches were summarily canceled due to "lack of interest".
It is hoped that the attendance will be sufficient next week to resume the regular GHSC Match Schedule.

Hal
