Welcome back to GHSC Sports Fans.  It's a another spring day in Western Washington; overcast, raining, and temperatures in the low 50s. Well, Take Heart, Summer's coming soon.

Many thanks to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus for hosting our match.  Many thanks also to Doug Mclean for scoring and calling the match, and continued thanks to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, for bringing us Page 5 of The Great Equalizer Series.  Let's take a look at the arrays from a competitors eye point of view.  The first thing we notice about the match today is that all the clay targets, Standards and micros, are orange. The exception to the rule, of course, is the black micro in the middle.

Round 1
We see 2 straight rows of clays, the top row comprised of 4 Orange Standards, and the bottom row comprised of 4 orange micros.  If you are shooting a Limited Class handgun, you shoot at the 4 Orange Standards,  but if you are shooting an Open Class handgun, you shoot at the micros.  No matter whether Limited  or Open, if you break your 4 primary clays, you then engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 2

Round 2 starts to top & bottom a bit.  The top row starts out with an orange micro, then finishes with orange Standards.  The bottom row starts out with an Orange Standard,  and finishes with 3 orange micros.  Break your 4 Primary Clays, then engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 3

The top row starts off with 2 orange micros, followed by Orange Standards.  The bottom row starts off with Orange Standards,  followed by 2 orange micros.  Break your designated 4 Primary Clays, then go for the black micro in the middle.

Round 4

The top row starts out with 3 orange micros, The bottom row starts out with 3 Orange Stadards.  The last clay on the top row is aOrange Standard, and the last clay on the bottom row is an orange micro.  Break your primaries, and then go for the black micro in the middle.

Round 5

Here we have the mirror image reversed from Rnd 1We see 4 orange micros on top, and 4 Orange Standards on the bottom.  Break those, and then the black micro in the middle, and let's take a look at the results.

In the Ladies Class, Giti Anable has the victory.  Giti shot a score of 34 today, leading fellow lady Carrie Morton, with a score of 25, to the wire.

In the Limited Class, Loren DeShon showed the way, with a score of 48, outscoring even the Open Class guns.
2nd Limited was won by Dan Moore with a score of 41.  Giti's husband Tim Anable,
with a score of 37 took 3rd Place honors in the Limited Class.

In the Open Class, Jay Schoonmaker continued his winning ways, with a score of 44.
Jay was on fire today, with some runs more resembling those fired from a machine gun than a semi-automatic Ruger.
There was a tie for 2nd Open between our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, and this reporter, Hal Hansen, both sporting scores of 39.  In 3rd Place in the Open Class was our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus, with a score of 35.

An announcement, Clays Shooters, so Listen UP!!  Next Sunday, April 4, 2010, is Easter Sunday.  NO CLAYS MATCH!!  Easter is for honoring the beliefs of your religion, and for spending the day with your families.  Honor the traditions, and have a great weekend.

Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club for another Sunday afternoon Clays Match.  It's cloudy & rainy outside, the temperature is 54degrees, 1 heater is on, and all in all it's another perfect day to shoot at clay targets.  Thanks as always to Chuck Nicodemus for hosting our match, and many thanks to Doug McLean for cooking the books, running the microphone and callng the action.  Thanks to Chuck Treat for bringing us Page 4 of The Great Equalizer Series.  Let's take a look at the arrays from the handgunners perspective.  The arrays all are comprised of 2 slanting lines of targets on each side of the black micro in the middle.  Sometimes the top line will be all orange micros,  and the bottom line will be all Green Standards.
Sometimes the colors and Sizes will be reversed, and sometimes they will be mixed.  The plan is to find your 4 appropriate clay targets,  break all of them, and then proceed to the black micro in the middle and break it.  The shooters are to the line, the flag is up, and they're off!!

Round 1

On this screen the orange micros are on top, and the Green Standards are on the bottom.  Both rows are slanting from the outside bottom of the screen to the top of the screen just outside the black micro in the middle.

Round 2

On this screen the rows are reversed, with the orange micros underneath the Green Standards.  Same orientation, and the same ultimate goal, the black micro in the middle.

Round 3

On the top row, the first clay is of the orange micro persuasion.  On the bottom row, the first target on the outside is Green, and Standard sized.  A little bit of topping and bottoming, but not much.  Find your 4, deal with them appropriately, and then on to the black micro in the middle.

Round 4

This time again, the top row starts with an orange micro, followed up the hill by 2 Green Standards, and topped off by another orange micro.  The bottom row starts off with a Green Standard, followed up the hill by 2 orange micros, and topped off by
a Green Standard.  As always though, separating the 4 rows of color is the ubiquitous black micro in the middle.

Round 5

I guess this array could be called Mix & Match.  The 2 rows alternate sizes and colors with each clay target.  The top row starts with an orange micro, switches to a Green Standard, and then repeats.  The bottom row starts out with a Green Standard, switches to an orange micro, then repeats.  Pick out your appropriate 4, break them, then aim for the black micro in the middle and break it.

At the end of regulation play, we have Carrie Morton, our only entrant in the Ladies Class, with a score of 28.  In the Open Class, with scores of 45 are Loren DeShon, Chuck Treat & Jay Schoonmaker. In the Limited Class, with scores of 39 are Alan Caron & David Lee.  Looks like we are going to have a couple of shootoffs today.

Let's start with the Open Class, since they settled their ties first.  Three screens are moved back to 44 Feet, 1 line of orange micros bracket the black micro in the middle, and Jay Schoonmaker, Chuck Treat & Loren DeShon step to the line.  They all Load 5 Rounds, They are Ready, and they Fire!!.  Jay & Chuck are shooting Ruger .22s with Red Dot Optics.  Loren DeShon is shooting a Ruger .22 with iron sights.  The targets are engaged, the rimfires clatter, & Loren DeShon has broken all 5 of his clays.  Chuck Treat has broken 4 of his, and Jay Schoonmaker left 2 of his, probably for seed.  Loren DeShon wins the Limited Class, with Chuck Treat 2nd, & Jay Schoonmaker 3rd.  And on to the Limited Class.

In the Limited Class, Alan Caron & David Lee, both shooting 1911s, are tied at 39.
They will shoot at the same line of orange micros that the Open Class finalists did.
If they are successful in breaking all 4 orange micros, they will engage the black micro in the middle.  They approach the firing line at Doug's Call, they Load 5 rounds, they are ready, and they Fire!!   At the end of the string, both Alan & David have each broken 2
orange micos.  Let's try this again.  Limited Class Shootoff, take 2.
Again Alan & David will engage a line of orange micros, and again there will be a black micro in the middle.  David & Alan step to the line, & load 5 rounds.  They are ready, and they Fire!!  When the thunder ebbs, they have each again broken 2 orange micros.  Alan & David's Limited Class Shootoff, take 3.
This time the Match Management decides to hang Limited Class Standard sized Green Clays, for Limited Class guns.  Now it is 4 Green Standards in a row, with a black micro in the middle.  For a 3rd time, Alan & David come to the line, & load 5 rounds.
They are ready, and they Fire!!  Shooting at Limited Class Targets, with Limited Class guns, they both do much better.  This time they both hit 4 targets, and are again tied, with scores of 39 + 2 + 2 + 4.  Match Management takes a vote and decides this could, and probably would, go on all night.  Chuck Nicodemus, Doug Mclean & Chuck Treat decide that both Alan & David deserve the title, and they both win, and they both get medallions.
This leaves Tim Anable in 2nd place - Limited with a score of 37, and Steve Tinner, 3rd Limited with a score of 33.  Congratulations to all the class Winners, those who took 2nd place finishes, and to those who finished in third place.  And Congratulations to the entire field for some fine shooting today.

Just a note to all the Clays Shooters that April 4, 2010 is Easter Sunday, and there will be no Clays Match that day.  Easter Sunday is and should be devoted to Family, and reflection on one's religion.  Enjoy the day in that manner.

Next week March 28, 2010, our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat will bring us Page 5 of The Great Equalizer Series.  During your long practice hours this week, always remember:

SPEED IS FINE, BUT ACCURACY IS FINAL!!

Many thanks to our Match Staff, as always.    Thanks to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus, for hosting our match.  Thanks to our Scorekeeper, Doug McLean, for cooking the books and running the microphone, and thanks to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat for bringing us, in abstensia, page 3 of the Great Equalizer Series.

Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club and our weekly Sunday Clays Match.  Daylight Savings Time has returned, and all is Light with the world.  Yes, it's broad daylight for our match today, light overcast and 50 degrees, and Summer can't be far behind.
Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, absent today,  brought us Pg 3 of the Great Equalizer Series, with yet more variety and more challenge as each page is turned over.  Remember the program; the Open guns, and all .22s,  shoot at the micros, and the Limited guns shoot at the standards.  It doesn't matter which line your clays are on, find'em and plug'em.  Let's see what challenges Chuck has brought us.

Round 1
2 rows, each with of each.  Find 2 orange micros or 2 Green Standards on Top, find your 2 Orange micros or 2 Green Standards on the bottom, pick your respective targets and break them,  and if successful so far, go find the black micro in the middle and break it.

Round 2
Same design as round 1, but the micros & standards changed places.  No matter, find and break your respective 4 clays, then go to the middle and shoot the black micro.

Round 3
In this array, we find 4 Green Standards forming a square, bracketing 4 orange micros in a diamond configuation.  Find your 4 clays, break them, then engage and break the black micro in the middle.

Round 4
This time the 4 orange micros are bracketing the 4Green Standards.  The 4 orange micros are still in a diamond configuration, but they are spread out, in and around the 4 Green Standards.  You break your 4 respective clays, then it's time to engage and break the black micro in the middle.  And on to Round 5

Round 5
The clays are pointing the way.  The 4 orange micros, and the 4 Green Standards all form pointers aiming at the black micro in the middle.  Just follow the arrows.

At the end of regulation play we have some winners.  We had 3 Ladies turn out for the match today, and we consider that a Good Start.  Marla Crouch had the high Ladies Score, with a 29.  Carrie Morton, with a score of 25 and Devon Crouch with a score of 10 placed 2nd & 3rd respectively.

In the Open Class, with a score of 48, Jay Schoonmaker returned to the Winners Circle.  Darren Foreman followed with a score of 45, and this reporter followed with a score of 43.

In the Limited Class, Alan Caron once again had the high score, with a 44.  Alan's western motif, complete with a single action revolver, is distinctive, shooting with an NRA approved one handed style.  The reason Alan shoots his Single Action Army type pistol one handed is because of a sense of nostalgia, remembering when his other hand held the reins of his horse.  Alan, we seldom bring our horses to the range anymore.

Speaking of Western Motif, Loren DeShon brought his Buntline Special Revolver to our Clays Match today.  Loren shot a score of 44 with it, and with a score like that, even Wyatt Earp would have been envious.

Tim Anable finished 3rd in the Limited Class, with a score of 37.  I didn't take note of what type of gun Tim was shooting, maybe a Pepperbox.  Tim, we missed Giti today.  Tell her to bring her Revolver out next week and make the arsenal complete.

That's it for today folks, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.  Practice hard this week, it gets no easier from here on out.  Remember your fundamentals, and we'll see you right here next Sunday at 4PM.  In the meantime always remember:

SHOOT FAST!!   SHOOT ACCURATELY!!   BUT MOST OF ALL, SHOOT SAFELY!!

Before I go any further, I wish to make an addition to last week's Clays Match.  In addition to the new format, which seemed to garner all the attention, this Reporter failed to mention a new class added to our Sunday Clays Matches.  Starting last week, we added a  class designated for the Ladies, complete with an accompanying award for the winner of the Ladies Class.  This reporter got so involved in the descriptions and accounts of the new format initiated last week, that I completely overlooked the concurrent initiation of the Ladies Class.
This is something of a unique accomplishment, because this reporter has made a virtual religion of NOT overlooking the ladies during his lifetime.  This apology to the Ladies Clays Shooters should, I hope, put me back on track.
Effective last week, February 28, 2010, Our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus initiated the Ladies Class, and the invitation to all Ladies that shoot handguns to come on out and enter our match.  Assuming there are 2 or more Ladies that enter the match, there will be an award for the winner of the class, and if this reporter can manage it, attention brought to the number and scores of the top 3 Finishers
Last week's entrants were 2, Carrie Morton, GHSCs 1st Ladies Class Winner, with a score of 25, and Giti Anable, with a score of 22.  Well done Ladies.  Bring other Lady Shooters out and let's make this a large class.
This week, our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, brought us the 2nd installment of
"THE GREAT EQUALIZERSeries.  As was the case last week, the Open Class Guns
shoot at orange micros, while the Limited Guns shoot at Green Standards.  Of course,
as soon as the shooter breaks all their appropriate clays, She/He then goes to the center of the array and engages the black micro in the middle.

This week Round 1 will emulate last week's 1st round, with a straight row of orange micros on top, and a straight row of Green Standards on the bottom. Depending on the class in which you are entered, break all of your clays and then engage the black micro in the middle.

ROUND 2
Vertical as well as horizontal movement is required, as the Open Class targets start with an orange micro on the top row, then the next orange micro jumps to the bottom row, in the 2nd position, after which the final 2 orange micros return to the top row.  The Green Standards alternate appropriately and reflect an equal but opposite mirror image.  Nevertheless, the shooter engges and breaks all the clays respective to his/her class, and then moves to the black micro in the middle.  And on to round 3

ROUND 3

Again vertical as well as horizontal movement is required, starting with an orange micro
on the top row, followed by 2 Green Standards, and then another orange micro.  On the second row, we find 1st a Green Standard, then 2 orange micros, and another Green Standard.  Break them all, and then move in and engage the black micro in the middle.

     ROUND 4

Now both rows alternate between orange micros, and Green Standards.  The top row starts with an orange micro, jumps to a Green Standard, then repeats.  The bottom row is the opposite in colors and sizes.  The one standard for the array however, is none other than the black micro in the middle.

     Round 5

This array can only be named:  X Marks The Spot.  On either side of the black micro in the middle,  a diagonal line of clays, one ranging from Top Left to Bottom Right,
and another line ranging from Top Right to Bottom Left, cross to form an X.  Both Xs bracket the black micro in the middle.

     Match Results
In the ladies ClassCarrie Morton was the only entrant.  She shot a score of 23 today.

In the limited Class, Steve Tinner, with a score of 42, took the class victory.  In 2nd place, Dan Moore shot a score of 40.  David Lee, with a score of 39, took 3rd Limited.

In the Open Class, at the end of regulaton play, we had a tie score of 45 between this reporter, Hal Hansen and Jay Schoonmaker.  Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat took 3rd Open with a score of 41.  Hal & Jay each shot a score of 45, so we are going to have a Shootoff!!  One target screen back to 44FT, with a straight row of Orange Micros on either side of the black micro in the middle.  One string of fire for all the marbles, and our Scorekeeper and DJ, Doug McLean, with the call.  Shooters to the Line, Load 5 Rounds!!  Shooters Ready??  Fire!!  Hal & Jay engage their Orange micros, starting from the outside and working in, and Hal breaks all 4 of the orange clays, on to miss the black micro in the middle.  Jay however manages to hit only 2 orange micros, so this string, and the Open Class Victory goes to Hal Hansen with a final score of 45+4 to Jay Schoonmakers 45+2.

    Final Match Notes

Many thanks to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus for hosting our match today.
Many thanks as well to Doug McLean for cooking the books and announcing today's Clays Match.  And as always we thank our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat for bringing us the 2nd installment of "The Great Equalizer" series of target arrays.  Next week we will see Page 3 of The Great Equalizer Series.

OK Folks, our work is clearly cut out for us.  Let's practice a lot this week and improve steadily each and every week from now on.  There is no mystery to success, just the admonition from on high

February 28th, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club Clays Match Report

18 Guns entered

5 in Open Class  -  Class won by Hal Hansen with a score of 48
2nd Open won by Ken Bagley Sr. with a score of 40
3rd Open won by Mathew Reid with a score of 39

13 in Limited Class  -  Class won by Loren DeShon with a score of 47
2nd Limited won by Steve Tinner with a score of 43
3rd Limited won by Chuck Treat with a score of 39

Folks; We have a new game in town.  It's still the Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club Clays Match, and affectionately known hereafter as THE GREAT EQUALIZER!!  Here's the plan.  Due to the vast improvement in the shooting skills of .22 Rimfire Shooters, and the perceived unfairness for Centerfire Shooters, we will try to level the playing field a bit so that Center Fire handgun competitors can compete with more hope of success.  The object of the game is to generate the desire to shoot CenterFire handguns, including personal Carry Guns, with the objective being to challenge the Open Class Shooters.
In the Open Class, shot with handguns having Optics, Lasers, Compensators, and other exotica, the targets will be the 2" Micro Clays on the screen, in whatever array configuration is presented.  All CenterFire handguns with Optics, likewise will engage the 2" micro clays.
All Limited handguns, equipped with iron sights, no compensators, or lasers, will henceforth engage the 4" Standard Sized Clays, again in whatever array configuation is presented.  The Limited Class guns have the option of engagign the 2" Micros if that seems more challenging and desireable.
On this last day of February 2010, the clays shooters were gifted with a beautiful blue sky, cool air, but not enough to justify lighting the propane heaters.  As if a harbinger of Spring, even the black micros in the middle were hung with no white dot in the middle, and there was (barely) enough light to be able to see them clearly.  Coming up in March, Daylight Saving Time will allow our Clays Match to be shot in it's entirety in bright daylight. But I digress
Many thanks to our Match Staff for coming up with this new format, and further challenging our long-suffering shooters.  Chuck Nicodemus, thanks for hosting and directing our match.  Many thanks to Doug Mclean, our Scorekeeper and Disc Jockey, for running the match and cooking the books so effectively.  And a special thanks to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat for creating the new format, and presenting us with Series 1, of the original 2, of "The Great Equalizer" Series.  Today we saw the first array, and next week we will see the second.  After that, I believe we can expect to see some new arrays regularly,  with target arrays befitting the type of guns directed at them.

Round 1
Two rows of clays on each side of the screen.  The Top Row, specifically for Open Class Guns, was comprised of 4 orange micros.  For the Limited Guns, the bottom row consisted of 4 Green Clays.  Whether Open or Limited, engage your respective row of clays, and if successful in breaking them allengage the black micro in the middle.  And on to

Round 2
Round two is an exact duplicate of Round 1.  If you liked Round 1, here is another chance.  Now for a change, it's....

Round 3
On the top row, we start out with 3 orange micros for the Open guns, but the 4th Clays is a Green Standard for the Limiteds.   On the 2nd row, we start out with 3 Green Standards for the Limited guns, but then have 1 orange micro for the
Open Guns.  A little bit of bouncing around is required in round 3, and the requirement is to seek out your 4 respective clays, break them, and then engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 4
Round 4 is a carbon copy of Round 3, designed to give all the clays shooters a false sense of security, and a feeling of complacency.  But we all know better, don't we?

Round 5
The top row of this array, as well as the bottom row, will be shared equally between Open & Limited Guns.  The top row starts out with a Green Standard, then sees 2 orange micros, and then another Green Standard.  Conversely, the bottom row starts with an orange micro, followed by 2 Green Standards, and ends with an orange micro.  If the shooter is successful in engaging and breaking all of their respective targets, they are then to engage and attempt to break the black micro in the middle.

At the end of regulation play we have a couple of winners.  In the Open Class, this reporter, Hal Hansen has emerged victorious with a score of 48.  2nd Open is claimed by Ken Bagley Sr. with a score of 40, followed immediately by Mathew Reid with a score of 39.
In the Limited Class, Loren DeShon continued his winning ways with a score of 47.  2nd Limited was won by Steve Tinner with a score of 43.  Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, took 3rd Limited with a score of 39.

Next week we'll see Series 2 of "THE GREAT EQUALIZER" .   In addition to the requirement for accuracy and speed, you'll find the need to bounce around a bit from high to low, and back again.  This GREAT EQUALIZER series is going to be
FUN!!  At this point, no one, including our Arrays Impressario, knows where this is headed.  The only guarantee is the ongoing need for accuracy, trigger control, patience, and maybe just a little luck.  So bring a handgun fitting the class of your choice, and see how long it takes us to outgrow this challenge.  In the meantime, always remember,

"IT'S ALL ABOUT SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND TRIGGER CONTROL.  ALL THE REST IS JUST THERE TO CONFUSE YOU".
