       Ladies Class - none entered  *Yes, Ladies.  From now on whenever there are 2 or more Ladies entered, You will have your own class.  You will still be eligible to win your age class, as usual, but will have the added incentive to outshoot your female competitors.

     Hello, and welcome sports fans.  It was a bright, clear & quite cool evening at our GHSC plate match tonight.  Shooters were greeted by a bracing temperature of 56degrees.  Before the evening was over, people had fond memories of our heaters.

Well, it won't be long.  In the interim, many thanks to Mathew Seagraves for setting up a bonfire for the shooters to hover over, providing some much needed warmth to keep our hands and fingers warm and active.

     Thanks also to Mathew and Wolfgang Seagraves for setting up the stage tonight.  Couple the good work setting up our plate match, and setting up and tending our Bonfire, and all the shooters at our match tonight are much appreciative to Mathew & Wolfgang.  While I'm in the thanking business, many thanks to James Austin for taking over the scoretable, scoreboard and calling the match.  Rob & Reba Potter had business elsewhere and couldn't attend our match tonight, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to the set-up crew, the scoretable DJ and to all those who stepped in to run the firing line tonight. Leon Potter stayed pretty busy as one of our Line Marshalls, and we're much appreciative to all who contributed to running our match.

     We had 3 new shooters tonight also.  2 of the three are going to be departing the area soon, one clear back to Germany.  We sure enjoyed having you stop by and attend our match while you were in town, gents.

     We had a light turnout tonight, only 16 shooters put on warm jackets, turned up their collars and came out to enjoy the fresh air.  Somehow, an abbreviated program seemed in order tonight, and we ran only the basic 5 rounds and the finals.  Sudden death just didn't seem to be in the cards, so it got skipped by general consent.  Also, no reload round developed, but the skill and enthusiasm of the 16 shooters present meant fast strings of fire, more than a few misses, and so we had reloads going on all evening.  And on to the finals.

     As we approach the end of the finals, there are but 3 guns left in the running:  Hal Hansen, Lee Lewis and Loren DeShon.  Lee puts paid to this reporters evening in a duel in which Hal probably couldn't have hit the ground if he had dropped the gun.  Still, Hal mounts the "terminated" trailer holding fast to the Super Senior Class ribbon, so all was not lost.  Now it's just Loren & Lee left battling, with Lee having 2 numbers to Lorens 3.  Lee  evens the score a bit with a quick win, then sets up to try and do it again.  The next duel goes to Loren, leaving Lee with just 1 number left.  Lee &Loren get ready, and Leon Potter  calls the action. 

     Shooters, Load and Make Ready!  Shooters Ready?  Stand by!!  At the horn both shooters hammer the plates,

Lee Lewis misses a plate, and Loren DeShon does not!!  Sting, set and match to Loren DeShon.  Lee wins the Young Bucks and Does Class however, so in defeat Lee goes out victorious.  Earlier, Mike Blondin won the Senior class, good shooting Mike.  Wolfgang was the only Junior shooting tonight. but he shot well and is looking for more competition. If anyone knows of any young folks who need practice shooting, tell'em to come on out and play.  Maybe, if they are lucky, Wolfgang will let them move and set up the plate racks.     OK folks, that's it for another week.  We'll see all of you who can make it to the Sunday clays matches, held each Sunday @ 4PM right here at GHSC.  Monday evenings at 5pm, come on out and practice for Tuesdays Plate Matches, as usual held each Tuesday at 6pm, except of course for National Holidays.

September 22, 2009 Plate Match Report

     It is the first day of Fall, 2009 and the weather was perfect.  Clear blue skies and the temperature at 72degrees. 

 

     First things first.  Many thanks to Mathew Seagraves  and OJ Kimura for setting up the stage tonight.  Rob & Reba Potter were in Idaho at an IDPA pistol match, so James Austin took over running the board and calling the match.  Thanks James.  Several of the guys ran the line tonight, and thanks to them all.  Now, the important stuff.

     Mathew Seagraves had his kitchen set up, and what a spread he put out.  Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Sauerkraut, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, and all anyone could eat.  Then, to top off the menu, our newest Senior Shooter, and Birthday Boy, OJ Kimura brought a huge chocolate cake from the Claimjumper Restaurant in Tukwila,  for everyone to enjoy.  Now, THAT is a Birthday Cake.

     We join the action in the Sudden Death Finals, as the Birthday Boy, OJ put this reporter on the trailer.  Exit Hal. Dan & Leon duel, string to Dan, Exit Leon Potter, our Super Senior Class winner tonight.  Mark Wuesthoff duels with James Austin, string to Mark.  Dan duels with Mike, string to Dan.  James then duels with Mike, string to James, exit Mike.  OJ duels with Dan, and wins a close one.  Loren duels with Mark, string to Mark, exit Dan.  James  takes a duel with Mark, but comes in second to OJ on the flipside.  James gets a bit of payback against Mark.  Then Loren and Mark duel, with Loren winning a close one, and staying alive. 

     James duels with OJ, with James winning, and it's OJs turn for payback, this time against Mark.  OJ, you may be getting older, but you sure aren't getting any slower.  OJ puts paid to Loren's match in a fast string, exit Loren.  Folks, we are getting down to it!!  Mark has 1 number remaining, James has 2, and OJ has 2.  Mark gets by James, to bring them even at 1 number.

     OJ duels with Mark, with Mark winning this string.  So now folks, It's SHOWTIME.  After an exciting night of plateshooting, Mark Wuesthoff, James Austin, and Mark the Birthday Boy Kimura are all even with 1 number apiece.  1st up; Mark Wuesthoff duels with James Austin.  At the sound of the horn James and Mark hammer the plates.

Mark is totally ON!! tonight, and beats James to the wire.  String to Mark.  Exit James.  

     Now, for all the marbles, Mark Wuesthoff duels with Birthday Mark Kimura.  Shooters Load and Make Ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand by!!  At the horn Mark and OJ  attack the plates with blood in their eyes.  Mark Wuesthoff with his 9mm Browning Hi-Power, and Mark Kimura with his .45ACP Nighthawk Custom 1911.  Sorry  OJ, you are now a Senior Class shooter, older and wiser.  but Mark Wuesthoff has been a Senior Class shooter for a long time.  Mark has forgotten more than many younger shooters ever knew, and tonight he completely forgot how to lose. String to Mark Wuesthoff, Match to Mark Wuesthoff, and the Senior Class ribbon to our newest Senior Class participant, OJ Kimura.  

     Well done to all our participants tonight.  A couple of announcements now.  

 

     This coming Sunday, September 27, 2009 we are having a work party at the GHSC Range, replacing our steel ricochet plates, and some overhead structural beams.  We have all the tools we need, we need muscle and energy from our shooters Sunday morning at 0830 to make the project go quicly, so that we can continue to enjoy a safe secure shooting environment for our plate matches, as well as our daily shooting practice.  If as many as can will show up at 0830 Sunday morning, we'll get this repair and renovation completed while the range is closed anyway for the PITA Shotgun match.  No Clays match sunday afternoon this week either.  Everyone who can, come on down.

 

     Finally, This reporter and Plates Match Director is considering adding a class of plate shooters, a Ladies Class.  Reba is a regular plate shooter, Terry McAlpin is a regular, and Michele Makinson has expressed an interest in participating, as soon as she takes delivery of her Nighthawk Custom 1911.  Well Michele, you may as well start with one of the best pistols on the market.  So spread the word.  Tell the ladies to come on out to our plate matches, Tuesday evenings at 6pm.  Ladies, tell your friends.

September 20, 2009 Clays Match Report

          Today was the last clays match in the Summer of 2009.  Next Tuesday, September 22 is the first day of Fall 2009.  Today we enjoyed another perfect day for a clays match.  The sky was clear and blue, and the temperature was a comfortable and vigorous 65degrees. 

     Our Arrays Impresario, Chuck Treat, presented target array series J today.  This series of target arrays consists of 5 sets of parallelograms sprinkled with Standard Green Clays, Standard Black Clays, Orange Midis, Orange micros, and of course, always the black micro in the middle.  During the first three rounds we got to shoot at at least a few standard sized clays, along with some orange midis and micros, but by the 4th round it was limited to orange midis, orange micros, and a black micro in the middle. By round number 5, no more standards, no more midis, but 4 orange minis on each side of a black micro in the middle.

All the targets arrays were in the shape of parallelograms, but the further into the match we progressed the fewer large clays were on the wire, and the more tiny micros.  The last round had nothing but orange micros, all leading inward to the black micro in the middle.

     At the end of 5 rounds, we have 2 winners.  This reporter,  Hal Hansen, shooting his Open Class gun, has the high score for the match with 48.  Loren Deshon , shooting a Limited Class handgun, has the Limited Class high score for today of 41. Talk about close, hot competition.  In the Open class today, the top 4 guns were separated by only 1 target.  Hal had a 48, Chuck Nicodemus and Chuck Treat each had a score of 47, and Jay Schoonmaker ended the day with a score of 45.  Now, that's close. 

     Thanks to Chuck Nicodemus for hosting our match, Thanks to Doug McLean for running the microphone, calling the match, and for keeping score.  And thanks to all our shooters for showing up, helping keep the screens fresh, and for making our clays matches a success.  

     It's good to have a nice entry list of shooters again.  With Fall here now, we expect to see the number of shooters stay larger, and as always we have come to expect more and better scores from the shooters that are here.  Next week Chuck Treat will start the arrays catalog over again, with target array series A.  We'll see you all right here at GHSC at 4PM.

 MOUSE GUN MATCH, MAYBE?

 

     OJ and this reporter are in the formative stages of planning a plate match just like the plate match on Tuesday evening, the only difference being that this match will be shot only with .22s.  .22s will indeed knock down the plates if the plates are hit up high.  As always in this discipline, shot placement is everything.  The format will be the same as our Tuesday evening match, but only one .22 will be entered limiting entry fees to $5.00 for the match.  Tentatively, plans are for the shooters .22 handgun to be topped off with ammo, but no reloads will be allowed. 

The Class will be for Open Guns, so any sights, comps if desired, if it goes "bang" safely, it's good to go.  Top off the mags, no reloads.  One gun entered per match, entry fee $5.00. 

     We already have approval for the match if we can get enough interested shooters, so if you would like to see this event become reality, contact Hal Hansen @ hal2005@centurytel.net and let us know.  The matches will be held at 6pm Monday evenings.  Until the Mouse Gun Matches become reality, bring your .22s out Monday evening at 5pm to the plates practices, and see for yourself that if you hit the plates properly, they will indeed fall for a .22.  See you then.  Remember, the more interest we have in a Mouse Gun Match, the sooner it will be reality.

 

     IMPORTANT NOTE;  NEXT SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH, THERE WILL BE NO CLAYS MATCH.  GHSC IS HOSTING A PITA MATCH, AND THE RIFLE/PISTOL RANGE WILL BE SHUT DOWN FOR REPAIRS.  IF YOU ARE ABLE, SHOW UP NEXT SUNDAY MORNING @ 0830 AND HELP US DO SOME MAINTENANCE TO OUR PISTOL RANGE.  THE RANGE NEEDS SOME REPAIRS AND WE ARE GOING TO GET THEM DONE NEXT SUNDAY, SEPT. 27TH STARTING AT 0830.

     Another perfect summer evening for shooting.  Clear sky, 72degrees, and calm, comfortable air.  The ambiance of the range was made even more perfect by a bonfire on the rifle side, and everyone enjoyed the flames and the smell of woodsmoke, mixed with gunsmoke.  And, it gets better.  Next week Mathew Seagraves has promised to bring hot dogs and hamburgers to BBQ.  Given the established fact that Mathew absolutely knows how to BBQ over that fire, this should be a treat to behold.

     Thanks to Mathew, Wolfgang and OJ for setting up the stage tonight.  Thanks to Reba for running the scoreboard and table,

and to her hubby Rob for running the line until he had to leave to attend the GHSC bored meeting.  Then a lot of the shooters took turns running the line, and thanks to them all.

     Due to the large turnout of shooters tonight, we had 4 regular rounds of shooting, and of course our Sudden Death finale.

Round 3 was our Mandatory Reload round, and it is fun to watch the improved quality of reloads since this feature has become part of our matches.  No doubt about it.  When the tank runs dry, one has to refuel it.  Sooner is much preferable to later.

     We join the action late in the sudden death finale.  After 32 guns mixed it up all evening, we come down to the final 3, each with one number left on the board.  George Flaherty, Kevin McAlpin, and James Austin.  George duels with Kevin, crossing the finish line first.  Exit Kevin.  Then for all the marbles, George Flaherty and James Austin duel.  Shooters, Load and Make Ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand By!! At the horn,  George and James GO for it.  Uncharacteristically, James misses a couple of plates, and George Flaherty DOES NOT!!!!  George Flaherty wins our match tonight, boosting Leon Potter into the Super Senior Winners Chair.  Mark Wuesthoff wins our Senior Class this evening, James Austin takes our Young Bucks & Does Class, and Wolfgang Seagraves wins the Juniors Class.  Well done, Victors!!  We'll see you all right here next week to try and de-throne our current winners, and rather we manage that or not, we'll sure enjoy Mathew Seagraves' BBQ.  See you all next week.

September 13, 2009 Clays Match Report

     What a beautiful day for a clays match.  Sunny, bright, and 73 degrees warm.  Perfect!!  14 Guns came out to enjoy the weather, the sport, the camaraderie, and the color of the match.  Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, came forth with target array series I today, and a good target catalog it was.  Let's take a look at it.

 

     Round 1 - Little diamonds, big squares*

          Alternating vertical lines of clays of 2 sizes.  Standard black clays form a diamond, surrounding 4 orange micros forming a square.  8 clays on a side, with a black micro in the middle.  Pick 4 of the 8 to engage and break, then on to the black micro in the middle.

 

     Round 2 - Potpurri*

 

          This reporter can't really discern an particular shapes in this array.  3 orange micros form the outer barriers, 2 vertically stacked green standards and then 2 orange micros and a black standard form the inner perimeter on each set of 8 targets.  Pick 4, engage them, and then it's on to the black micro in the middle

 

     Round 3 - Potpurri, take 2

 

           Essentially the same pattern as in round 2, but a black standard is substituted for a green on those 2 vertically stacked stardards which are bracketed by 6 orange micros. Then of course, the ubiquitous black micro in the middle.

 

     Round 4 - Bye Bye Standards, hello micros

 

           6 orange micros form a circle, the 2 circles bracketing a black micro in the middle.  No more stardard sized clays in this match.

 

     Round 5 - Orange Squares

 

          4 orange micros forming a square on each side of the lonesome black micro in the middle.

    

     At the end of regulation play, we have 2 winners.  In the Limited Class, with a score of 43 is Jim Skedd.  Jim played the game a bit differently today.  Instead of his NightHawk 1911 in .45ACP, Jim shot a ruger Mark II in .22 caliber.  His Ruger was wearing iron sights, and will be a force to be reckoned with in the limited Class.  Actually, truth be to tell, Jim just didn't stay up late last night reloading ammo for the clays match.  Put your victory medallion under your pillow Jim, and sleep the sleep of the just. Or at least the "Just About".....

 

     In the Open Class, with the high score for the match, was Jay Schoonmaker.  Jay was observed today challenging himself, with the commensurate benefits in markmanship and skill.  When the target arrays presented perfectly good standard sized clays to shoot at, he intentionally chose to shoot at the micros.  Good on ya Jay.  Jay has been one of the most successful clays shooters this year, and his score today of 48 will add yet more to his legend.

September 8, 2009 Plate Match Report

          We had perfect weather for a plate match tonight.  Clear, dry & 65degrees.  No Jackets, no overheating, and the shooting was hotter than Mid-July in Arizona.  26 guns came out to contest the match tonight, and we saw some strings of fire that by all estimates were pushing the 2 second mark.  FAST!!

     Thanks to Mathew Seagraves, OJ and George Flaherty for setting up the stage tonight.  Thanks to Rob Potter for acting as our Line Marshall, and to Reba for her usual excellent job of scorekeeping and running the microphone.  Thanks to all this practiced efficiency, we were able to get in 5 rounds of shooting and then a Sudden Death Finale. 

     We pick up the action as Loren gets by Rob, something not many shooters can brag about tonight.  Rob then gets his revenge as he puts this reporter on the trailer.  Exit Hal, tonight's Super Senior Class Victor.  James and Mathew then duel, with James winning, but James' bubble bursts the next duel, as Mark Wuesthoff wins a close one.  Rob then duels with Loren, winning by a nose, exit Loren.  Rob duels with Mark and beats him to the finish line, exit Mark, our Senior Class winner this evening.  Mark wasn't even using his pet revolver in this match.  He was fumbling around in the dark using his Browning Hi-Power.  I didn't know it could get that rough, Mark :)  (authors note:  Everyone at the GHSC Plate Match has been trying to talk Mark out of that Browning Hi-Power, for months now. We should live so long)

     Now, it's James Austin with 1 number,  and Rob Potter with 3.  Where have I heard this story before?  A rhetorical question, I assure you.  Shooters, Load and Make Ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand by!!  At the horn Rob and James hose down the plates, and once again, Rob's Nighthawk pounces!!  This is one of the runs I mentioned earlier. From the end of the starter horn's blast, to the end of Rob's string of fire, this reporter estimates a total time lapse of not more than 2 1/2 seconds, tops!!  FAST!!

Rob Potter is the winner of the string, and the match.  James Austin takes some consolation from having won the Young Bucks & Does Class. 

     That's a wrap for another week folks.  The weather is a bit cooler these days, the skies a bit more uncertain, school is back in session, so come on out and shoot plates on Tuesday evenings.  Next Monday evening at 5pm our regular Monday Night practices resume, so come to the club and get warmed up for next Tuesday's match.  See you all then.

September 6, 2009 Clays Match Report

          Welcome everyone.  There is no doubt it's September, and summer is fading.  Heavy rain showers struck the area intermittently today, and it was a lot cooler at game time, with the temperature hovering at 59degrees.  There was a heavy overcast above, and there was also no doubt that fall is on it's way.  Light jackets sufficed to keep everyone warm, and during the heat of competition, shirtsleeves once again became the order of the day.

     There was a light turnout today, with only 12 guns on hand to shoot at Target Array Series H.  We noticed one change from the normal menu right away.  Instead of the Standard Sized Clays being green or black today, they were all white.  The first several rounds still featured a few standard sized clays, mixed with a lot of orange micros, and the ever-present black micro in the middle.  In the field of 12 guns today, 9 were in the limited Class.  It's apparent the shooters are using the clays match as a practice ground for the Tuesday evening plate matches, and familiarizing themselves with their defense weapons they carry every day.  Absolutely an excellent idea, and one that will serve our shooters well, should, God Forbid, the need ever arise.  So let's take a look at target array series H as the shooters saw it today.

    

     Round 1:  Check Mark *

 

     This array starts on the outside with a standard white clay, then has a descending line of orange micros, turned up  just before the black micro in the middle.  Did I mention, there were five targets before engaging the black center micro?  Pick 4, break them, and then it's on to the black micro in the middle.

 

     Round 2:  NNNNNNNs *

 

      This string has 2 lines of 5 clays looking like opposing "N"s.  The one standard white clay on each side forms the inside bottom point in the letter N, and is the last standard seen in this match.  

 

     Round 3:  micro nnnnnnns *

 

     This array is essentially the same as round 2, except in this string of targets, there are no standards, only 5 orange micros.  And of course, the black micro in the middle.

 

     Round 4: Parallelograms * 

    

     Here's an array for you geometry types.  2 opposing parallelograms, each comprised of 4 orange micros, with the ever-present black micro in the middle.

 

     Round 5:  Straight to the black *

 

     Round 5 is comprised of a simple straight line.  The line is comprised of 4 orange micros, with the ubiquitous black micro in the middle.

     At the end of regulation play we have a winner in the Open Class.  Chuck Treat has hit 46 of the clays and leads the pack of Optic-toting pistols.

     In the Limited Class, we have a tie----Sort of.  It seems that Alan Caron and Mark Wuesthoff have tied at 33 targets apiece.

Unfortunately for Alan, in frustration he has abandoned hope of victory and left the club.  The rules are clear on this.  You have to be present to win, so Mark Wuesthoff takes the medallion and has bragging rights for another week.  Well, hang in there next week Alan.  That single action Buntline .44 of yours was doing a good job today.  It would have been interesting to see two revolvers face off in a shoot-off. 

     Well, there you have it folks.  Fall is approaching, and it's dry and cozy in the range building.  The Clays Matches, Plate

 matche, & Defensive Shotgun Matches go all year around, so put on coats, jackets, hats and whatever it takes to stay comfortable and come on out and play.  See you all next week.

No Practical Shotgun today Sun. Sept 06, 2009

Three things helped me make the decision to cancel the
shoot today. Number one it is a Holiday weekend, number
two most shooters were not going to be at the match and
number three, It was dumping rain.
I hope I did not disappoint to many shooters this week, we
will have the match back on schedule next week. Thank you

      14 Young Bucks & Does - Class won by Lee Lewis

       No Senior Shooters Entered

       6 Super Senior Shooters Entered - Class won by George Flaherty

 

     Greetings Shooters, and welcome to the first plate match of September.  It was a bit cooler tonight, 52degrees, with broken overcast skies.  We were greeted by a full moon as we emerged from the match, and with that shining orb in place,  it was an even more beautiful evening for a plate match.  

     Turnout was down just a bit with only 20 guns entered, but schools start soon, and a lot of people are trying to wring the most out of the last vestiges of summer vacation.  Labor Day weekend is almost here, and after that we should be back to larger entries as vacations and lawn mowings subside. 

     Many thanks tonight to Mathew Seagraves, OJ and George for setting up the stage.  Thanks to Rob and the others who ran the line during the match tonight.  Many thanks to George Flaherty for running the board tonight.  And, as always, thanks to everyone who pitched in to tear down the stage after the match.  Many hands make light work, and many hands have always contributed to the fun and success of Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club's plate matches each week.

     Due to the excellent organization and active match staff, we were able to run 5 rounds and a sudden death finale.  Let's join the match during the sudden death phase and see how it went.  We'll start with this reporter's demise.  Hal dueled with James with James winning decisively.  Exit Hal.  Rob Potter dueled with Kevin McAlpin and won this one.  George Flaherty dueled with Lee Lewis, and walked away with a win.  Our sole Lady entrant, Tarrie McAlpin, dueled with Lee, and Lee won this string.  Exit Tarrie.  Win or lose Tarrie, you won a bunch of duels tonight, and congratulations on your dedication to shooting and to your dramatic improvement.  Tarrie is a shining example of the fact that a shooter will improve more with a short exposure to competition than in a long exposure to plinking.  Ya done good, Kid.

     Tarrie's husband Kevin McAlpin dueled with James Austin, and apparently the McAlpins have the MOJO tonight.  Kevin wins a fast duel with James, and just keeps on keep'in on.  Lee and George duel, with Lee winning.  Rob and Lee duel, but sorry, not this time Lee. 

     George and James duel, with James ending George's night.  George Flaherty exits as our Super Senior Class winner, so I don't think he felt too bad.  Lee and Kevin duel, with Lee winning.  Kevin joins his wife Tarrie, on the trailer.  Maybe next week, kids. 

Back to the action; James and Rob duel, with Rob winning.  The trailer is getting kind of crowded now, what with James joining the dispatched crowd. 

     We are down to the final two guns left standing.  In a lopsided tilt, Rob has 3 numbers to Lee's 1.  Shooters, load and make ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand By!!  At the horn Rob and Lee go for it, and folks, we have a winner.  Rob Potter puts Lee away on the first string, and Rob Potter wins our match tonight.  Lee Lewis has control of the Young Bucks and Does Class for another week.  Well done, Class winners. 

     OK folks, that's the rundown for this week.  We'll see you all right here at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club next Tuesday evening   for our plate match.  Be advised everyone.  Next Monday, September 7, 2009, is Labor Day, so we will have no plate practice that evening.  The next day, September 8, 2009, we will be right here for our weekly plate match.  SEE YOU THEN!!
