Good afternoon Clays Shooters, and welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club, and many thanks to GHSC for hosting our match.  Our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus brought us another good match, and for his efforts we thank him.  Thanks
to Doug McLean, recently back from several surgical procedures,  for running the scoresheet and the microphone, and  special thanks to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, for bringing us Page 4 of "The Great Equalizer Series."  We had a field of 14 Clays Match Competitors today, and let's take a "Firing Line" perspective of what they saw.

Round 1
For Open Class competitors today, we saw a straight line of orange micros.  Four Standard Green Clay Targets, configured into a  Square, were positioned at the ends of the line, on the outside, for the Limited Class Competitors.    If the shooter is entered in the Limited Class, he, or she, attempts to "gun down" the Green Standards.  In either case, if, and only if, the shooter is successful in breaking their primaries, they then go to the center of the array and engage the black micro in the middle.

Round 2
Now the Green Standard on the top right corner of it's Square joins the line of orange micros, on the inside of the array right next to the black micro in the middle, replace by an orange micro completing the square.  This adds a bit of vertical movement to the game.

Round 3
Now both the Green Standards on the inside edge of the Limited Class Squares have joined the orange micro line.  The two inside clays comprising the square are now orange micros.  Now it's time to formulate an actual path through the targets to minimize movement and maximize speed.  Don't get to fast though. No matter which class you are in, you still have to engage and break the black micro in the middle.

Round 4
Three of the Limited Class Green Standards have replaced the orange micros on the center line by now.  Three of the Open Class orange micros are now on the corners of the outside squares.  By now we can see where the different clays are headed for
in Round 5.  And don't get complacent.  When, and if, you break all of your primaries, you still must engage and break the black micro in the middle.

Round 5
Yep!!  Now the squares on the outsides of the arrays are comprised of 4 orange micros.  The 4 Green Standards are all in a line right down the middle.  If you break all of your primaries, you then still have to engage the black micro in the middle.  Let's see what our Clays Shooters were able to accomplish today.

In the Ladies Class, Giti Anable took the win with a score of 25.

In the Open Class, Ken Bagley Sr. rejoined our ranks to take the win, with a score of 45.

In the Limited Class, Allen Caron took the win with a score of 45.  As usual, Allen was shooting his Single Action Army Revolver.  Our GHSC Clays Match Limited Class  is starting to look like an Old West cowtown, with all it's Single Action Revolvers.
Jim Skedd took 2nd Limited today, with his Ultra Modern NightHawk.  Jim's score of 44 was close, but not quite enough.  We had a tie for 3rd Limited between Chuck Treat and Loren DeShon, both shooting Revolvers.  Loren's Revolver was quite a sight.  Picture yourself on the streets of Tombstone, AZ. back in the late 1800s.  Picture Loren with the star of a lawman pinned to his chest.  In the spirit of Wyatt Earp, one could just picture Loren DeShon as he walked with his brothers and Doc Holiday to the OK Corral to deal with the Clantons.  Riding on his right hip is the very pistol personally given to him by none other than Ned Buntline.  It's a (really) long barreled, Single Action Revolver, chambered in .45 Colt, it's rounds fueled with Black Powder.  In a pitched battle, it would take a few minutes after the shooting was over before anyone could see who won.  Both Loren & Chuck Treat finished with scores of 43 today, but I doubt if the Clantons did any better this time than the last time so long ago.

And that's our match for today.  Remember, there will be NO CLAYS MATCH NEXT WEEK, over the JULY 4TH  HOLIDAYThis is the time to celebrate our nation's independence, and to remember our Veterans who made it possible.  We'll meet right back here July 11, 2010 at 4PM and start the July 2010 series of our Clays Matches.  This will give us all a chance to practice our shooting, smooth out our techniques, and do a lot of live, and dry, firing in preperation for upcoming battles.  When you are honing your skills with your handguns, remember that SAFETY is priority #1.  #2 is Accuracy.  Only after honing those skills into final form should one become concerned with Speed.  Remember the shooter's axiom:

"SPEED IS FINE, BUT ACCURACY IS FINAL"!!!!

6/21/10 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Plate Match

24 Guns Entered  --   Match Won By Loren DeShon
     2nd place - George
     3rd place - Jeff

Welcome to the first day of Summer, 2010.  The sky was overcast with patches of blue sky showing, the temperature was 58 degrees at gametime, but it was dry!!  We'll take it.  Many thanks tonight to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club for hosting our match.  Thanks to Mike Blondin for Directing & running the match, and thanks to Matt, Dillon & Paul for setting up the stage in time for a prompt start at 6PM.  Thanks go also to George Flaherty for running the scoreboard and the microphone.  With all this good match management, we were able to get in 5 Rounds and a Sudden Death Finale.
As the Sudden Death Finals near their conclusion, Loren is kind enough to put this reporter, Hal, on the trailer.  Exit Hal.  George  then does the same for Kevin, exit Kevin.  George duels with Loren next, and gets the win in a fast, accurate duel.
Jeff duels with Loren next, and this duel goes to Jeff.  George & Loren have a rematch, setting the stage for duels to come later.  George gots way ahead, but then faltered.  loren started off slowly, but then bore down, and in a fast, accurate, come-from-behind finish, Loren DeShon took the flag.  George is up again, this time against Jeff, but Jeff's luck has run out and George puts him on the trailer, along with almost all the rest of the field, but willingly settling for 3rd place.
Now it's down to George Flaherty & Loren DeShon, dueling for the match victory.  Coincidently, both George & Loren
are ex-military fighter pilots.  George is a veteran of the US Air Force, flying F-106s, while Loren is a veteran of the U.S. Navy,
having flown FA-18s off the decks of aircraft carriers.  George is currently retired, while Loren continues to fly as a Captain of Boeing 737s for Alaskan Airlines.  As has been noted in past reports, Loren carries his handgun on the flightdeck when he is in command of his flights.  George has 6 numbers on the board at this point, to Loren's 3.
Rather than let George agonize over the ensuing 6 duels, let it suffice to say that younger, well honed skills and reflexes took over at this point. Loren buckled down under the pressure that has marked his aviation career, and Loren won 6 straight duels over George.  Loren's runs were 6 of the smoothest, fastest, most accurate, computer programmed runs of the night,  and each and every one of the competitors in our match tonight looked on in awe.  George, if you had to go down in flames, it may as well have been by the best.  Even the Bloody Red Baron would have had his paws full the way Loren wrapped up this match.  Congratulations to you both, and congratulations to each & every shooter in our match tonight for a well run, well shot and most importantly Safe Match.  WELL DONE!!
Our next match here will be on July 19, 2010, the July 5th match falling on the July 4th Holiday.  So, July 19, 2010 at 6:00PM we'll meet right back here for another match and we'll see who is the best gunslinger that night.  Until then always remember when you're shooting:

"SHOOT FAST!  SHOOT ACCURATELY!! BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, SHOOT SAFELY!!!"

Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club, Ladies & Gentlemen.  We're back here for another Sunday afternoon Clays Match, and we have 16 guns entered to make it a good one.  As always, we offer our sincerest thanks to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club for hosting our event.  We thank our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus,  for running the match, and we thank Jon Lagerquist for running the scoresheet & the microphone in Doug's absence.  Chuck Treat, our Arrays Impressario,  brought us Page 3 of The Great Equalizer Series today, and it was an appropriate series of arrays, too.
The weather dawned cool and rainy today.  The sky was totally overcast, a light rain was falling, and the heaters were out to offset the 55degree temperatures.  Today was a classic example of early fall weather in the Pacific Northwest.  Unfortunately,
tomorrow, June 21, 2010, is the first day of summer.  The weatherman is getting either ahead, or behind, schedule.
Page 3 of The Great Equalizer Series epitomized the fall weather, bringing us an early halloween.  The clays arrays were comprised of orange micros, for the Open Class Guns, and Black Standards for the Limited Class Guns.  Rather Open or Limited Class though, when the shooter successfully engages his/her appropriate array, he or she then heads in and engages the
Black Micro in the Middle.

Round 1
Round 1 today was composed of a series of boxes.  On the outside of each array were two vertically stacked Black Standards.  Working toward the middle of the screen we then came upon a vertically stacked pair of orange micros.  Then another vertical set of Black Standards followed by another vertically stacked set of orange micros.  If the shooter engages and breaks their primaries, they go to the black micro in the middle.

Round 2
Round 2 is the same as round 1, except the vertically stacked sets of clays are reversed.  On this array, one first encounters the two vertially stacked orange micros, and then goes from there.

Round 3
Round 3 finds the 4 Black Standards forming a box, and enclosing the 4 orange micros which are forming a diamond.  In the middle of the screen, waiting for it's turn, is the black micro in the middle.

Round 4
Now the square is formed by the Black Standards, which are bracketed by the orange micros, still in the outline of a larger diamond.  Find the fastest way to engaging and breaking your primaries, then proceed to the black micro in the middle.

Round 5
Round 5 is a bit different.  The clays are still Orange Micros for the Open Guns, and they are still black Standards for the Limited Guns.  The clays appear to form two arrows, one each for the micros and Standards, and each arrow, overlayed with the other arrow, is pointing toward the black micro in the middle.  So let's see how our shooters did today.

We were privileged to have 5 Ladies competing today.  We want to welcome back, after a long absence, Mark Kimura's Niece,
Ariel Kimura, here all the way from Sunny Southern California.  Admit it Ariel, you came up here to Western Washington for the weather, didn't you?  Well, welcome back and we hope to see you as often as possible.  Tomorrow is the first day of Summer,
so when you return, be sure to bring suntan lotion.
Carrie Morton took the honors in the Ladies Class today, with a score of 27.  Carrie, you had that Glock 19 working for you.
Congratulations.  Taking 2nd in the Ladies Class today, was Gitti Anable, shooting a score of 25.  Marla Couch took 3rd place in the Ladies Class, shooting a score of 22.

In the Open Class, this reporter, Hal Hansen, won the class with a score of 44.  Taking 2nd Open today was Jeff Morton with a score of 39, and 3rd in the Open Class was Kirk Foreman. with a score of 24.

It might be noted that this reporter's winning Open Class score of 44 only tied for the high score of the match.  Loren DeShon,
shooting his H&K 9mm won the Limited Class, also with a score of 44.   Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat finished 2nd in the Limited Class with a score of 43, followed by our 3rd place Limited Class finisher, Jay Schoonmaker, with a score of 40.

OK Folks, there you have it for today.  Tomorrow is the first day of summer, and we hope to see some summer weather soon.  We'll be back right here, same time and same station, next Sunday, June 27, 2010 for another clays match. We hope to see you here with us.  Until then, drive safely, practice hard, and always remember:

June 13, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Clays Match

Only 1 Lady today, Giti Anable, with a score of 22

2 Open Guns, Class won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 46 + 4 + 4
          2nd - Hal Hansen with a score of 46 + 4 + 3

6 Limited Guns, Class won by Tim Anable  with a score of 38
2nd Limited, Chuck Treat with a score of 35
3rd Limited, Darren Foreman with a score of 32

Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club, and it's partially renovated Range Building.  A lot of work has gone into the construction this past week, and there is more to be done.  Starting this Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at 0900hrs, the next phase of the renovations will take place, and if you are looking for something productive to do for the day, come on out and help!!

The weather was beautiful today with temperature bumping 70degrees, a light scattered cloud layer, and the fun and excitement of another clays match to usher in summer. Many thanks to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club for hosting our event, as always.  Thanks go to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus, for running the show, and to Jon Lagerquist for being our Scorekeeper and DJ in Doug's absence.   As always, a hearty thank you! to our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat.  Due to the low turnout,
and the fact that everyone enjoyed the Helter Skelter Match or last week, we did it again today.  In the Open Class, competitors
shoot at Orange Micros, and in the Limited Class, competitors shoot at Green Standards.  No matter the class, if the shooter is successful in breaking their 4 primaries, They then engage the black micro in the middle.
As far as the actual arrays on the screens, the rules are:  THEY'RE ARE NO RULES!!  The configuration of clays are up to the imagination of the folks who are between rounds, and who go downrange to reset the clays on the screens.  Whatever designs come to mind, as long as there are but 4 Micros and 4 Standards, and a black micro in the middle, the arrays are good to go!
Helter Skelter Matches are FUN!! because one never knows what one will be engaging, and it keeps one on one's toes.  No Excuses Either.  Handgun competitors are expected to engage all kinds of different arrays, and those are the ones the clays shooters see when they go Helter Skelter.

As stated earlier, Giti Anable was the only Lady shooting clays today, and she managed a respectable score of 22.  There were only 2 Open Guns entered today; Jay Schoonmaker and this reporter, Hal Hansen, both shooting scoped .22s.  At the end of regulation play, there was a tie in the Open Class, with two scores of 46.  Jay & Hal are going to have a shootoff.  The screens stayed at 10yds, and the array consisted of straight lines of black micros, the black micro in the middle raised a few inches above the main line of clay targets.  The shooters are to the line, they have loaded 5 rounds, and they are ready.  On the command of Fire!!, Jay and Hal engage the black micros, and they both break 4 of them.  Target reset,  Open Class Shootoff, take 2.
The screen stayed at 10yds, the array was still a line of black micros, the black micro in the middle was still raised a few inches above the main line, Jay & Hal are once again loaded and ready, and on the command of Fire!! again they engage.  When the noise evaporates, and the guns are cleared, Jay Schoonmaker has once again hit 4, while Hal has hit but 3.  String, class and the high score for the match go to Jay Schoonmaker.  Well, I would have hit them all if I hadn't missed so many.

     In the Limited Class, Tim Anable is the victor with a score of 38,  Our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat, took 2nd Limited with a score of 35.  3rd Limited was claimed by Darren Foreman, with a score of 32.  Congratulations to all our competitors today for helping break in our newly, though still partially, renovated range building. Thanks also for some great scores and a safe, fun match.  Next week is another opportunity, and we'll make the most of it right here next Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 4:PM.  Practice hard, and practice on a variety of arrays since you may not know what you'll be seeing until you come to the line. The practical part of this game is that you should be able to successfully engage anything you will face, and by competing in these matches, your skill will increase exponentially.  So practice and play hard, and always remember;

"IT'S ALL ABOUT SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND TRIGGER SQUEEZE.  THE REST IS JUST THERE TO CONFUSE YOU."

Apparently a lot of people thought the range was still closed, as only 8 guns showed up to play today.  Giti Anable was the only lady competitor, and she acquited herself well with a score of 22.

June 7, 2010 Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Plate Match Report

14 Guns Entered      Match won by Loren DeShon
      2nd Place - Lee Lewis
       3rd Place - Tim Ridenaur

It's the first Monday of June, 2010 and we're back at Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club for another plate match.  It's a beautiful Spring Evening, and 14 guns are entered to compete for two weeks worth of bragging rights.  Our match tonight, as always, is brought to you courtesy of Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club, and we thank them for the use of the excellent facilities and their gracious welcome.
Thanks go also to our Match Director & Scorekeeper, Michael Blondin, for putting this all together.  Our Line Marshall team tonight was captained by Mathew Seagraves & Mark Kimura, with cameos by Loren DeShon.  With these guys running the show we got in 5 Rounds of shooting and a Sudden Death Finale.
There was a fairly light turnout tonight, with 14 guns making the trip.  Maybe the rest of the regular competitors were at home mowing lawns or weeding gardens.  By the end of our Sudden Death Finale, there were still 3 Guns with numbers on the board,  and now the curtain is going up on the final act of the match.
The Final 3 shooters still contending for tonight's match victory are Tim Ridenaur, Loren DeShon & Lee Lewis.  The first of the last duels is between Tim Ridenaur & Loren DeShon.  The standard protocol for plate engagement is 4 plates & the popper.  At this stage of the match however, the usual protocol gives way to everyone going for All Of'em, which in this case is 5 plates & the popper.  Remember, there is a six round capacity limit in all firearms , so it's 6 Rounds, for 6 targets.  Don't Miss!  In this duel, Tim did, and Loren didn't, duel to Loren.  It's a much better idea to slow down a bit and make sure you hit the plates the first time, because against these guys, there is no second time.
Loren advances to a duel with Lee Lewis, and by the narrowest of margins, Loren gets there first.  Loren is shooting a seldom seen HK P-7 "Lemon Squeezer", in this duel against Lee's NightHawk.  Duel to the Lemon Squeezer.  Loren DeShon is on a winning streak now, and Tim steps up to try and end it.   Not this time Tim, another close duel to Loren.  Tim gets an opportunity for revenge, as he draws Loren for a back to back engagement.  Loren is unstoppable by now, and shows Tim the door, and the steps leading to the trailer.  Exit Tim Ridenaur.
Folks, we are down to the last duel, the one for all the marbles.  It's between Lee Lewis and his  NightHawk, against Loren DeShon and his Heckler & Koch P-7 Lemonsqueezer.  Mathew Seagraves will call the action.  Shooters, load and make Ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand By!!  At the starter's horn, Loren & Lee go for All Of'em!!  Thunder Rolls, we have the clatter of falling steel, and the two Clanks!! as the poppers fall.  Tonight, in this duel, for 2 Weeks of bragging rights, Loren DeShon's popper is laying tight to the deck, with Lee's popper on top.  As has often been noted, a plate match is not the time to come out on top!!  Duel to Loren DeShon, 2nd place to Lee Lewis, and 3d place to Tim Ridenaur.
Tonight's match, with 14 entries, was a fast paced affair.  We had 5 Rounds & A Sudden Death Finale and were stlll done by 7:30pm.  There was virtually no standing around, and all the shooters had to be ready to step to the line at a moment's notice.
Tonight's match was action shooting at it's best, and we invite all the plate shooters within the sound of my computer to come out and share the fun.  Our next match will be June 21, 2010 at 6PM.  Grab your pet pistol "Fluffy", eyes & ears, plenty of ammunition, all your magazines, and come help us gun down the clunky old plates.  Keep Loren & Company on their toes and make them work for their fame.  So until June 21, 2010 at 6PM, drive carefully, practice a lot and when shooting always remember:

"IT'S ALL ABOUT SIGHT PICTURE AND TRIGGER SQUEEZE.  THE REST IS JUST THERE TO CONFUSE YOU!!"

Howdy, Clays Match Fans.  Welcome back to Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club.  It's Sunday afternoon and we all know what that means.  We're going to have a Clays Match.  We have 10 guns turned out to compete today, and our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat has brought us A STARBURST MATCH.  Many thanks to our Match Director, Chuck Nicodemus, our Scorekeeper & DJ Doug McLean along with our Arrays Arrays Impressario Chuck Treat for presenting the match for us today.  As mentioned above, it's The Great Equalizer Series, THE STARBURST today. This is an entirely new format for clays matches, and one that bears repeating, A Lot.  For the entire history of the clays matches, the arrays have been known in advance.  The benefits of this plan are debatable, but at least the shooter knew what he/she was going to be facing before they ever got to the club.  Not so today.  Round 1 started off as usual for page 2 of The Great Equalizer Series.  The top row presented with 4 orange micros.  The bottom row presented with 4 Green Standards.  If you are entered in Open Class you engage the orange micros.  If entered in the Limited Class, you engage the Green Standards.  Having successfully broken your 4 primaries, you move to the center and engage the black micro in the middle. The respective colors & sizes of the clay targets, my friends & faithful readers, constitute the extent of the traditional format for today's match.
For the next 4 Rounds, the arrays were designed by Chuck Nicodemus, Chuck Treat, and the rest of the shooters entered in this contest. The arrays on one side of the screen were almost always different from the arrays on the other side of the screen.  They could be described at squares, circles, smiles, frowns, the result of someone flicking a wet paint brush.  The variety of the arrays was limited only by the imagination of the Ad Hoc arrays designer.  On any one side there may be as many as 8 orange micros, and 6 Green Standards.  The final constant the shooters all saw today, was that after picking out their 4 primaries, they went to the center of the screen and engaged the black micro in the middle.  To any potential Clays Shooters out there:  "THIS YOU HAVE TO SEE!"

The Ladies Class was represented today by Carrie Morton, shooting her Glock 19.
Carrie negotiated this extemporaneous match very well today, shooting a score of 24.

In the Open Class, Jay Schoonmaker ended this reporter's win streak at 6. Jay's winning score of 45 rather forcefully nudged this reporter into 2nd Place today, with a score of 40.  Jay & Hal never dueled today, so this reporter can truly say that Jay didn't beat me, Chuck Treat's impromptu series of targets didn't beat me.  The only one who beat Hal today was Hal.  Congratulations to Jay Schoonmaker.  One more quick note from this reporter:
"Having gone down to defeat at Jay's hands today, my wife, Sandy, can rejoice because now I can put my lucky T-Shirt in the laundry.  Many thanks to Jay Schoonmaker.

In the Limited Class, our Arrays Impressario, Chuck Treat proved once again that he can shoot as well as he can design.  Chuck and his revolver turned in a score of 44 today.
He was followed by Mark (OJ) Kimura who shot a score of 38.  In 3rd Place in the Limited Class was Jeff Morton with a score of 28.

I can't say if this type of format will become the norm in the future, but I, for one, hope so.
Seldom indeed, in any practical application of handguns, will the shooter know the array or position of the targets, and part of a shooter's job is to think quickly when faced with a scenario.  The type of competition faced today will go far toward imprinting this on a competitor's mind, and that is a good thing.  The format is fair for all, and while both sides of the screen are usually different for each relay, parity is accomplished when the shooters change sides and shoot at what their competition just engaged.  Chuck Treat, You Have A Winner Here.  Well Done!!

This type of match accomplishes one other thing too.  Now, instead of having set arrays to plan and practice for, a shooter can put about anything up to practice at.  Who knows, you may well be facing exactly that array next Sunday.  So, practice a lot of variety.
Imprint the basics in your mind's eye and prepare for anything.  Because anything is what you are liable to be facing in the very near future.  We'll see you at the range, but until then always remember:

"SHOOT FAST!  SHOOT ACCURATELY!! BUT MOST OF ALL, SHOOT SAFELY!!!"
