11 Limited Guns - Class won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 44

Well, it's about time to say goodbye to August and hello to September.  The weather is fine with blue skies and a balmy 72degrees at gametime.  Our arrays impressario, Chuck Treat, has set up target array series "G" today, so, after a couple of announcements, let's get to it.

As you may have heard, pursuant to winning a chair on the Gig Harbor Sportsmans Club Board Of Directors, Rob Potter has taken over the job of Competition Director, and so is now the Match Director for this Clays Match, our Defensive Shotgun Match, and will continue his role as Match Director of our Falling Plates Match.  Well Rob, you have your hands full now.
Robs first act as the Clays Match Director was to institute some new policies that should simplify and ensure safe gun handling at our matches.  Rob has a long history of competition in IDPA and Speed Steel matches, and knows whereof he speaks.  Let's look at how we do it when Rob is running the show.  These policies very closely reflect practices in the plates matches, and it's great to have consistency and seamless transitions.

     1) Firearms shall remain in holsters or bag until the line official directs the shooters to come to the line and load 5 rounds.
(I'll direct these directions strictly to the Clays Match in this match report).  At that time the shooter may draw or unbag his/her firearm and load 5 rounds, putting the safety (if any) on and keeping his/her finger out of the triggerguard. Shooter will assume the "low ready" position and await further direction.
     2)  While awaiting one's turn to shoot, magazines and speedloaders may be loaded at any time.
     3)  After a shooter has completed his string of fire, the observer standing behind the pair dueling will physically inspect the magwell and chamber of both the shooters firearms, observing, then declaring the firearms clear.  Directions will then be issued to run the slide forward, (slide forward), aim downrange and pull the trigger (hammer down), and direct the shooter to put the cleared gun away (holster or bag).
In the event the shooters firearm has a magazine safety requiring a magazine to be inserted into the magwell in order to pull the trigger, the shooter will insert the (now empty) magazine they just finished using into the firearm, aim downrange and pull the trigger on an empty chamber, and then drop the empty magazine and holster or bag the firearm, all under the watchful eyes of the observer.
For any new shooters not familiar with these procedures, observe and learn well.  These are standard safety procedures in effect in every organized firearm contest held anywhere in the USA. (and the world for that matter).  Get used to them.
Having completed the firearm clearing procedures, the shooter then may walk back to the other side of the range and reload magazines.
The rest of the procedures in effect for the clays matches have been in effect virtually from the start of the matches.  If you have any questions, ask Chuck Nicodemus or Rob Potter, or any of the regular clays shooters.  If whoever you ask doesn't know the answer they will direct you to someone who does. Always remember:

THE ONLY DUMB QUESTION IS ONE YOU DON'T ASK!!   Safety violations can result in being disqualified from the match, so don't be bashful. With that said, let's take a look at target array series "G" presented at todays match.

Round 1:  Straight Line Deductions*
The array starts with standard Green clays, alternating with orange micros.  As always, there is the black micro in the middle.

Round 2:  Celtic Cross*
On each side of the omnipresent black micro in the middle are four orange micro clays surrounding a green standard.
The trick is to pick 4 out of the 5 clays to hit before ending up engaging the black micro in the middle.

Round 3:  Arrows In*
on the outer edge of the array are two stacked orange micros to the left of a green standard, on the right of which is an orange micro with the arrow shape culminating in the black micro in the middle.

Round 4:  Bracketed*
Say goodbye to any standard sized clays from here on in.  In this array we see 2 orange micros on top, 2 orange micros on the bottom, bracketing an orange micro in the midst of the other 4 micro clays.  This forms 2 "squares", one on each side ot the black micro in the middle.

Round 5:  "V" for Victory*
Again we see 5 orange micros on each side, this time forming a V.  After picking which 4 to engage, and after actually hitting and breaking those four orange micros, the shooter is free to engage the black micro in the middle.

*  This reporter has taken the liberty of giving each round of clays a name, nominal to be sure, and subject to change before you see Array Series G again.

At the end of regulation play we have some very high scores and 2 winners.  In the Open Class, Ken Bagley Sr. has shot a score of 45.  In the Limited Class, Jay Schoonmaker has shot a score of 44.  Mighty fine shooting, gents. In closing, we wish to welcome the new shooters, and especially the Juniors.  Young Men & Young Ladies, we welcome you to our sport, and hope you enjoy learning and perfecting your skills for a lifetime.     Until next week, always remember:

SHOOT FAST!  SHOOT ACCURATELY!! BUT MOST OF ALL, SHOOT SAFELY!!!

Plate Shooters at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club, one and all!!;

Good evening folks, Hal Hansen here, back at the reporters desk.   It's great to be back, and we were greeted by a perfect, clear, warm evening for a plate match.  Before I go on, I want to thank everyone for carrying on the match in my absence, and especially to Rob Potter for taking over my Match Director duties.  An equally special thank you to OJ and Mathew & Wolfgang Seagraves for taking care of set up each week, and thanks to everyone who came out for all the help they put forth to make the match continuing fun each week.
Congratulations to Rob Potter for winning a seat on the Board of Directors of Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club, and for taking the club competition chair for the next term.  Rob will maintain the Match Director status he has so richly fulfilled in my absence, and with the help of Reba, OJ and everyone at the matches, I expect to see good things grow from Rob's leadership.  Good on ya, Rob.
Speaking of good things happening, Rob and Reba sure had their Nighthawks circling and pouncing tonight.  Rob and Reba made the GHSC plate match their family business, and with OJ taking the Young Bucks & Does honors, the field was well rounded and very competitive indeed.  Let's join the action in the midst of the "Sudden Death Finale", and see how the duels played out.

We join the action as OJ and James Austin duel, with OJ putting paid to James' night.  Exit James.  OJ then takes on George, but George wins this one.  Mark Wuestoff and Rob duel next, with Rob winning, exit Mark. Reba takes a fast duel from Kevin, exit Kevin.  Rob then duels with OJ, and knock'em all down first.  This reporter duels with Rob, with Hal winning.  Rob and George duel, with George winning,  but 2 losses in a row is all Rob can take, and he picks this reporter on whom to regain his winning ways.  Exit Hal.  sigh.....
Rob and George then duel, with Rob winning. Exit George, our Super Senior Class winner.  Reba and OJ duel, with OJ winning.  Exit Reba, our Senior Class Winner tonight.  Folks, we're getting down to it.  Rob and OJ duel, with OJ winning a close one, and OJ backs it up in another duel with Rob, winning this one as well.
At this point in the competition we have Rob & OJ still standing.  Rob has 2 numbers, to OJs 1.  So, for all the marbles, Rob and OJ face off on the firing line.  Shooters, load and make ready!!  Shooters ready?  Stand by!!  The horn sounds, the guns hose down the plates, and the sound reverberates through the range.  Folks, WE HAVE A WINNER!!
Rob Potter and his predatory Nighthawk have emerged victorious.  OJ finishes the evening as the Young Bucks & Does Class winner, and Rob Potter adds another plate match notch on his Nighthawk.

OK Folks, we'll see you all next week and we'll see if Rob & Reba can continue to make our plate match a family business, even in the face of all this competition.  It's still summer for a while yet, and the weather is warm, and the shooting is HOT!!
Come on out and enjoy both the competition and the weather, under the lights where nature intended.  Come on out Monday evening at 5pm for a couple of hours of practice and we'll see you right here Tuesday evenings, with guns blazing.  See ya then.

Hal

August 16, 2009 Clays Match Report

20 Guns Entered
10 Open Guns, Class won by Jay Schoonmaker - Score 48

10 Limited Guns, Class won by Mark Wuesthoff - Score 35

It's August in the Pacific Northwest, and the weather was perfect for a clays match today.  The sky was a clear blue, and the temperature was a delightful 72degrees.  We had a large entry field today, with 20 guns contending for the class victories.  Chuck Treat, our Arrays impressario, presented us with target array "J" this afternoon, and challenging it truly is.  Chuck has added a new twist to the arrays, using 3 different size clay targets, mixing and matching as an artist mixes his paints on a canvas.  Let's take a look at how we do it at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club.

Round 1
This array has it all; 3 sizes of clays, multicolored, and pick the path of your choice.  Be careful though, that black micro in the middle takes some aiming.

          O            O                        O            O
                                                                           O

                            O                      O                       O                   O

Round 2
A bit more variety as we see some large black clays, contrasting large green, medium orange and of course the ubiquitous black mini in the middle.

         O            O                        O             O

                                                                         O

                          O                      O                      O                        O

Round 3
Well, there are still at least 2 large clays in this array.  6 medium-sized orange, and of course the black mini in the middle.

          O                       O                        O             O

                                                            O

                            O                       O                      O                      O

Round 4
Bye bye large clays.  now it's all micros and midis, all orange, except for the black micro in the middle.

         O                                O                                     O                             O

                                                                       O

                         O                     O                     O                      O

Round 5
It's all minis now.  4 orange minis on each side,  and the black mini in the middle.

         O                               O                                               O                            O

                                                                   O

                         O                          O                          O                       O

At the end of regulation play, we have a pair of winners.  In the Open Class, with the high score for the match at 48, Jay Schoonmaker has shown the way.  Jay had the distinction and pleasure of edging out this reporter by 1 target.  Imagine getting a score of 47 and losing.  Rats!!  Well, many of us that often compete against Jay are used to pain.  Well done Jay.
In the Limited Class, with only iron sights and aging eyes, Mark Wuesthoff led the pack with a score of 35.  Well done Mark.
Hey Mark!! There's a  reason us older, Significantly more experienced shooters, use optics.  Even ex-Marines could benefit.
(This reporter will pay for that crack in the plate matches to follow)

OK folks, It's still summer for a good while yet.  Come on out and enjoy shooting at Clays.  The fields have been growing, and our scorekeeper and announcer, Doug McLean, has been running a smooth match.  Thanks also to Chuck Nicodemus for hosting our clays match, and thanks to Chuck Treat for laying awake nights dreaming up new arrays to challenge the shooters.  With
an "A" team like that, Sunday afternoons will forever be hard-pressed to offer anything better.  Come on Down!!
