June 28, 2009 Clays Match Report

14 Guns Entered Today

9 Limited Guns - Class won by Rob Potter with a score of 38
5 Open Guns - Class won by Chuck Treat with a score of 48

Hello sports fans, and welcome to the Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club and our weekly clays match.  It's a beautiful, warm 70degree day today, sunny and a true Western Washington summer day.  Our "Arrays Impressario", Chuck Treat, thought he would mix up the order of the target series today by presenting "Series I".  We had series G last week, so I guess we'll have "Series H" next week.  Actually, Chuck just wanted to use up some of the standard black targets to make some room in the conex storage box, so we're shooting "Series I" today.  As you will soon see, again, "series I" starts out with a lot of standard sized clays both in black and green.  Don't live in hope however, after the 3rd round you won't see any more standards, only micros.
Many thanks to Doug McLean for running the match today, and welcome to all the new clays shooters in attendance.  We hope you had a good time, felt sufficiently challenged, and will return just as many Sunday afternoons at 4pm as possible.  We missed Chuck Nicodemus this week.  Chuck hasn't been feeling up to par lately, and we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him here next week.    And now, on to the match..............

At the end of regulation play we have a couple of winners.  In the Open Class, Chuck Treat wins with a match-leading score of 48.  Close to perfect Chuck.  Very Close.  In the Limited Class, Rob Potter leads the field, TWICE!!  It seems we had 13 shooters enter originally today, but due to the format of the match, we need an even number.  Rob "Volunteered" to enter twice, thus rounding out the field with the even number of entries.  At the end of the match, the limited guns had 2 entries with a tie score of 38 - Both being ROB POTTER.  You still only get one winners medallion Rob, but Nice Shooting, both Chuck and Rob.
Looking ahead to "Series H" next week, it looks like a real Precision match.  2 standard targets out of 5 (plus the objective black micro in the middle, of course) for round 1,  2 out of 5 in round 2, and after that it's micros for the rest of the match.  Bring sharp eyes and steady hands, shooters, and we'll see you all right here next Sunday at 4pm.  In the meantime, remember Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club's mantra:

"Shoot Fast, Shoot Accurately, but most importantly, Shoot Safely!!"

Senior Division - 4 guns entered - Class won by Mark Wuesthoff

Good evening sports fans, and welcome to another Tuesday evening plate match at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club.
It was an overcast, warm, if somewhat muggy 70degrees at gametime, and 23 guns came out to make the most of it.
First the important stuff.  Many thanks to our setup crew tonight, comprised of OJ Kimura, Mathew & Wolfgang Seagraves, and Rob Potter. Reba was absent tonight, said to be at home thumbing through a new Nighthawk Custom Guns Catalog.  In her place, many thanks to James Austin who stepped in and ran the scoreboard, the pairings, and the microphone.  If you had had Reba's voice James, and if we hadn't looked, we couldn't have told the difference.  And of course, as usual, many thanks to Rob for running the line and being our Line Judge tonight.
With all this good help, we were set up and ready to rock well ahead of schedule. We shot 5 rounds plus a "Sudden Death" stage, and finished and had the stage taken down and put away by shortly after 8pm.  Well done, and thanks to everyone who contributed to the matche's success tonight.
For a recap of the finals, we join the action in progress well into the sudden death finale.  The shooters still contending at this point are James Austin, Lee Lewis, Mark Wuesthoff, Rob Potter, Loren DeShon, Mathew Seagraves and Hal Hansen.  We can cut that number by one pretty quickly as James shows Hal the exits in a fast duel, fast for James anyway.  Hal leaves with the Super Senior Class victory tonight.  Then Loren and Mathew duel with Loren winning, exit Mathew Seagraves.  Mark W. and Lee duel with Lee winning, followed by Lee pairing off against Rob Potter with Lee Lewis winning.  Exit Rob Potter.  Lee and Mark Wuesthoff duel with Lee winning another fast one, exit Mark, our Senior Class winner tonight.  James and Lee give a preview of things to come with a fast duel won by Lee.  James and Loren duel, with James winning.  Then Loren and Lee pair off for a duel, won by Lee. Exit Loren DeShon.  A lot of people have had that problem with Lee tonight, Loren.
We are now down to 2 shooters:  James Austin with 3 numbers, and Lee Lewis with 5 numbers on the board.
James and Lee square off for a duel, and now it's James with his 3 numbers still, and Lee is down to 4.  In the next duel James keeps his 3 numbers and Lee is now even, also with 3.  In the next duel, James gets there first again, and now it's James with nis 3 numbers to Lee's 2. The next sting is virtually a replay of the last.  James 3, Lee at 1. Shooters Load and Make Ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand By!!  At the horn the guns blaze, the plates fall, and folks, WE Have A Winner.  James Austin, in a pressure cooker designed for him, comes from behind to win the string, the Match and the accompanying ribbon, plus bragging rights for another week.  Exit Lee Lewis, our Young Bucks and Does Class winner tonight.
OK folks, see you all right here next week.  George Flaherty is on his way to Alaska where there was an earthquake measuring in the middle 5s today, so I'm sure we'll get some stories firsthand when George returns ina few weeks.  George must have been thinking of the plate match tonight enroute to Alaska, and Anchorage just got his "VIBES!!"
We'll see you at the plate practices at 5pm Monday evenings, and then right here Tuesday evenings at 6pm.  Don't forget Chuck Nicodemus' Clays Matches on Sundays at 4pm.  Almost all the competition one could ask for.  ALMOST!!

June 21, 2009 Clays Match Report

10 Guns Entered

6 Open Guns - Class won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 47
4 Limited Guns - Class won by Hal Hansen with a score of 38

Today, June 21, 2009 was the first day of summer.  The day dawned with clear blue sky, but by the middle of the day it had degenerated into a heavy cloud cover, thunder and lightning, and a very heavy rainstorm.  By the start of the clays match the sky had partially cleared, leaving a few thunder clouds, but no more of nature's light show.  The temperature was 60degrees, and the show began on time.  I guess a lot of the regular shooters were still under cover at home because we had but 10 guns braving the elements for an afternoon's sport.
Those of us that did make it to the clays match today wish to thank Chuck Nicodemus for hosting the match, Doug Mclean for running the board, and all those who pitched in to keep the target screens current.  Special thanks to Chuck Treat, our
Arrays Impressario for presenting Series G today.  This was one of your finest presentations yet Chuck.  It had a requirement for accuracy, speed, defining the fastest route, and the ability to change directions during the string.  Outstanding arrays.  Some inside information to our clays shooters: Chuck presented this reporter with a copy of his latest challenge, Series I, which we will see in 2 weeks.  Chuck, your mind has run amok.  We shooters are going to love it!  But now, a review of todays match.

Round 1
Just a nice simple straight line.  Uh huh.....

                   O    O        O     O      O      O       O   O      O

Round 2
Pick a route, any route, but only get 4 before you head for the black center micro.

                                   O                                     O
                     O       O    O      O       O      O     O
                            O                                     O

Round 3
At some point on this string, you are going to be going in 2 different directions.  Just watch your front sight for the whole story.

                          O                                                         O
                                     O    O      O       O        O
                           O                                                         O

Round 4
This string might be called "Up, Down, and Sideways" because those are the directions to the black center micro.

                           O            O                              O             O
                              O                    O                       O
                      O            O                               O             O

Round 5
"V" for Victory.  Accuracy, speed, and direction changes.  It doesn't get any better than this.  Until Next Week!!

                              O                O                   O                 O
                             O      O             O              O     O
                                  O                                      O

At the end of regulation play, we have 2 winners.  In the OPEN Class, with a score of 47, is Jay Schoonmaker.
In the Limited Class, with a score of 38, is Hal Hansen.  No question about it.  Optics really help.  So do youthful eyes, fast reflexes, and just virtually no end of the proper type of practice.  One can buy the equipment, but that is only, ONLY!!,  the first step.  Practice and perserverance will pay off over time.  Being able to hit tiny targets, quickly, and change direction while still keeping one's eye on the dot is called "SKILL".  And skill comes after a LOT of the proper type of practice.
We were happy to have Michael Flaherty return to our match today.  Mike has been setting the scholastic world on fire in college.   So, to give the rest of the world a chance to catch up Mike has been turned loose for the summer.  Welcome back Mike, now we'll see if you can keep up with your Dad after sitting in class all winter.  Don't forget the plates Mike.  Your Dad has set quite a standard on Tuesday evenings.  Like Father, Like Son???
And, we'll see all you clays shooters right here next week, and now that summer is here, maybe the rest of the regular and guest field will come out of their bunkers and take refuge instead out here at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club.  See ya next week.

Until then, always remember the axiom:  "PRACTICE ONLY MAKES PERMANENT.  PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT".

June 16, 2009 Plate Match Report

Total number of Guns entered - 33 - Match Won by James Austin
1 Junior - Kiel Marvik, upopposed
21 Young Bucks and Does - Class won by Rob Potter
3 Seniors entered - Class won by Rebecca Potter
8 Super Seniors entered - Class won by George Flaherty

Welcome to Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club's Tuesday evening plate match.  We have a warm, 72degrees, overcast, muggy evening sports fans, and 33 guns condending for fame, albeit temporary.  We have a bit of a change, harkening back to the genesis of this match.  Tonight we're shooting at our original plate racks, with quite a bit larger and heavier plates.  Whereas the newer plate racks sport smaller and lighter plates, placing a premium on accuracy, these larger heavier plates require some "push" to knock over, so power factor comes into play as well.  The plates don't fall as fast, but there still can be no hesitation before going on to the next plate while waiting to see if the last one actually fell.
Many thanks to our setup crew, tonight consisting of Mathew Seagraves, O.J. Kimura, and Nick Hansche.  The stage was ready when it was time to start, and ready early enough to allow some practice beforehand.  Thanks again to Rob and Rebecca Potter for, in Rebecca's case running the scoreboard and the lineup, and in Rob's case for running the line.  Thanks as well to those who stepped in to help Rob and Reba when they were shooting.  With this well-oiled machine, we got in 4 rounds of shooting and a "Sudden Death" finale, even with this large field.  Well done folks, everyone appreciates it.
Well, as the poets say "The best laid plans of Mice and Men (and Women) often go astray".  We made it through round 1 and just into Round 2, and one of the old plate racks just broke.  The bar that raises the plates at the pull of the cord has broken, and there is no way to "jury rig" it for the evening.  So we change back to our newer plate racks, and keep on keeping on.
And another development to make the evening more interesting.  We are starting to feel some raindrops.  Out comes the umbrella to protect our score table and scoreboard, and we look up at all the clouds and wonder if our impending record of 29 days without measurable rainfall is in jeopardy.  By the time this reporter has made notes about our "storm", the "storm" has quit.  Heck, that wasn't even enough to dampen the pollen.  This "storm" was indeed perfect.  It was very short, inconsequential, and a complete non-event.  But I digress.
We started this event with 33 guns.  As the evening progressed we have seen attrition reduce the numbers to 5.  James Austin, Lee Lewis, Loren DeShon, Rob Potter & George Flaherty.  Now it's lose and leave for the finalists, so let's pick up the action with Loren and Rob.  They are ready, set and away they go.  It's a fast duel, the cream of the crop showing their stuff, but Rob gets there first, exit Loren.
George Flaherty and James Austin square off, they attack the plates, and George just cannot believe it.  Both shooters run the first 4 plates in nearly record time, James gets the 5th one in an unbroken string, but George's 5th plate rocks, starts to fall, rights itself, wiggles a bit, and then steadies and just stands there mocking him.  String to James, exit George, our Super Senior Class winner tonight.  Well George, at least you winged it.
Rob and Lee duel now, and Rob wins this one.  Exit Lee.
Folks, we're down to 2, James Austin and Rob Potter.  Shooters, Load and Make Ready!!
Shooters Ready?  Stand By!!  Then the horn, the gunfire, a moment of hesitation on the part of the crowd as they wait to see if any plates are still standing.  Well, they are all down, but James' went down first.  Exit Rob Potter, our Young Bucks and Does Class winner.
And Congratulations!! to James Austin, tonight's match winner.  We know James thrives on pressure, and Rob and the rest of the field surely put the pressure on James this evening.  It's fun at the end of the matches to see what GOOD really looks like from our finalists.
Thats all for another week folks.  We'll be right here same time next week, and the shooting should be just as good. Ya'all come on out and join us.  Warm up Monday evenings at 5pm and come on out and shoot at the plates on Tuesdays at 6pm.
We will see you all then.

June 14, 2009 Clays Match Report

12 guns entered

Open Class Winner:  Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 47

Limited Class Winner:  Hal Hansen with a score of 35

It was only a warm day, overcast and 64degrees.  Shirtsleeve weather and perfect for the purpose.  We shot Series F today and this series combined all the elements of a great competition - The need for speed, accuracy, and the ability to change course during a string of fire, and still stay focused.

     Round 1
This series typified our Arrays Impressaio, Chuck Treat's, type of target array.  Let the shooter look downrange, assume that it would be impossible to miss all those HUGE targets, then blaze away only to find them still hanging there, untouched, and laughing!!

                       O                           O                                 O
              O    O   O      O    O       O

     Round 2
Now we're about half standards and half micros.  This is getting more interesting.

                             O                                                 O
               O         O    O    O        O
             O                                                 O

     Round 3
Start fast, then put the brakes on, determine your route through all those tiny orange clays, and finally, maybe, engage the black micro in the middle.  Maybe!

                         O                                     O
              O      O         O    O        O

                          O                                     O

Round 4
Say goodbye to the standard sized clay targets.  They are just a memory.  From here on in all you will see are micros.
One might call this array the "Arc of Triumph".  Maybe!  It looked like this.....Well, triumph may be a bit presumptuous.

                  O    O                         O     O
            O                O     O     O                   O

Round 5

Let's call this one  "THE STRAIGHT & NARROW".

              o    o    o    o    o    o    o    o    o

Y'all be real careful out there!   At the end of regulation play we have a couple of winners.  With high score for the match, in the Open Class, is Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 47.  In the Limited Class, with a score of 35, is Hal Hansen, your "faithful" reporter.

Don't forget the plate practices on Monday evenings at 5pm, and the plate matches on Tuesday evenings at 6pm.  Welcome to our new shooters, which comprised about half the field today.  Practice hard, develop your technique, dry-fire a LOT, and we'll see you right here next Sunday at 4pm.  In the meantime always remember:

SHOOT FAST, SHOOT ACCURATELY, BUT MOST OF ALL, SHOOT SAFELY.

June 09, 2009 Plate Match Report

29 Guns Entered.  Match won by Rob Potter
1 Junior Shooter Entered - Wolfgang Seagraves, Unopposed
16 Young Bucks & Does - Class Won By Lee Lewis
4 Senior Shooters - Class won by Mark Wuesthoff
8 Super Senior Shooters - Class won by George Flaherty

It was a beautiful night for a plate match.  Yeah, I know.  They all are!!  Tonight was warm, clear, and best of all, we had food!!
Thanks so much to Mathew Seagraves, Wolfgang, and Mark Kimura for setting up the stage, and thanks to Rob & Reba Potter for running the line and the scoreboard.  Thanks to all those who stepped in to spell Rob & Reba when they were shooting, notably Mark Wuesthoff, OJ, and George.  Everyone at the match wishes to thank Mathew Seagraves, the BBQ Chef Extraordinary for running the BBQ.  Mathew is one fine hamburger and hot dog Chef.
We join the action with 6 shooters still contending.  They are:  Mark, Lee, Rob, Reba, George and Loren.  Mark duels with Lee, to no avail, duel to Lee.  Rob and Lee duel, and Rob has a little better luck, duel to Rob.  Reba and George duel with George getting there first, exit Reba.  Rob takes a fast duel from Mark and then Lee puts Loren on the trailer for the evening in another really fast duel. Exit Loren.  George and Rob duel with Rob winning, then Rob follows up with a win over Lee.  George takes a quick duel from Rob, and Mark then plays payback by taking a duel from George.
At this point it's down to 4 shooters:  Rob w/4 numbers, Lee with 1, George with 1, and Mark with 1.  Not to be denied, Mark takes a duel from Rob, and Rob follows up by putting Lee on the trailer for the evening.  Mark then duels with George, successfully, putting our Super Senior Division winner, George, out of action for another week.  Exit George.  Lee duels with Mark, and outruns him, retiring him for tonight.  Mark exits as our Senior Division winner.
Well Sports Fans, it's down to 2.  Rob Potter with 4 numbers on the board, and Lee Lewis with 1 number.  Shooters, Load and Make Ready!!  Shooters Ready?  Stand By!!  At the horn, Rob and Lee hammer the plates, and Lee Lewis gets there first.  Now it's Rob 3, to Lee's 1.
Again the range commands, and again the horn, but this tme Rob is ready.  Rob wins the duel, the match, and has bragging rights for another week.  Lee retires our Young Bucks & Does winner.
Congrats to Rob, Lee, George, Mark and Wolfgang.  Thanks again to all those who made the match run so smoothly, and so quickly.  We'll see you all right here next week.
I can't promise that we'll have a BBQ, but the way to bet would be to bring a fast gun, a quick eye, an  attitude of gun safety, and a good appetite.  We'll see you next week.

Hal

June 7, 2009 Clays Match Report

14 Guns Entered Today
7 Open Class, Won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 46
7 limited Class, Won by RobPotter with a score of 42

What a beautiful day for a clays match.  The temperature was a perfect 68degrees, the sky was overcast but no precipitation, and it was shirtsleeves for real.  14 guns came out to shoot at the clays, and our "Arrays Impressario" Chuck Treat, while himself absent today, presented Series E of our arrays catalog, in abstenstia, and challenged the shooters to the fullest.  The arrays started out looking relatively easy.  If anyone believes that, has Chuck ever got a deal for you!

June 2, 2009 Plate Match Report

34 guns entered tonight
2 Junior Guns - Class won by Kiel Marvik
18 Young Bucks & Does - Class won by Lee Lewis
8 Seniors - Class won by Dan Moore
6 Super Seniors - Class won by George Flaherty

We had a hot time at the old range tonight. Temperatures hovered at 81degrees, in the range bldg, in the shade.
Thanks to Mathew & Wolfgang Seagraves, and Mark (O.J.) Kimura for setting up the stage. Thanks to Rob & Reba Potter for running the scoreboard, the microphone and marshalling the firing line. With all this good help, even with 34 guns entered, we got in 4 rounds of shooting and the "Sudden Death" finale.
We join the festivites in progress as Dan Moore and George Flaherty shoot to a tie. On the re-run, George outruns Dan, who leaves the firing line with a look of frustration. Bryce and Reba duel, with Bryce winning, followed by Rob and OJ, with Rob winning. OJ takes a bit of revenge on Lee then, and to prove that he can do it too, Rob takes a fast duel from Lee. At this time, George and Bryce duel, with George winning, exit Bryce. Rob duels with Dan and wins. Exit Dan, our Senior Class victor tonight. OJ duels with Lee, but Lee has had about enough of losing for awhile, and defeats OJ in a fast duel. Exit OJ. We now have 5 guns still up and running; Rob with 2, George with 1, and Lee with 2. George and Lee duel, with George winning - Rob 2, George 1, Lee 1. Rob and Lee duel, and Rob is in the groove now. Winner Rob, Exit Lee, our Young Bucks & Does Class winner.
So, after a long, hot, night of very hot shooting, it comes down to Rob with 2 numbers on the board, to George's 1.
Shooters, Load and Make Ready!! Shooters Ready? At the horn Rob and George attack the plates, but, sorry George, not tonight. Rob wins the string of fire, the match and George is retired with the Super Senior Class ribbon to hang on his wall this week. Not bad for an old guy, George:)
Well, the weather is predicted to be hot, dry and sunny for about 2 weeks, and there is no better place to enjoy it than at GHSC at a plate match. Come one, come all. Bring a fast gun, some good eyes, and an attitude of safety. We'll see you next week right here. Drive safely. And remember always:

SHOOT FAST!! SHOOT ACCURATELY!! BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, SHOOT SAFELY!!

Hal
