14 guns were entered today. 10 were in the Limited Class, and 4 were in the Open Class

Hal Hansen won the Open Class with a score of 45

Jim Skedd won the Limited Class with a score of 39

First, a correction on last week's clays match, held May 24, 2009. Due to a mistake discovered in the addition of the scores of the 5 rounds of the Open Class, It was discovered that Hal Hansen hit 45 targets, not 47. Sadly for Hal, but happily for Ken Bagley Sr., Ken hit 46 targets, and therefore beat Hal Hansen by 1 target. Congratulations Ken, too bad you weren't here today to repossess my medallion. Well, I won Open Class today so I'll put the medallion back on my wall where it has been residing all week. Hunt down Chuck Nicodemus for your May 24, 2009 medallion.

I guess it's still required to be able to count all the way to 50 to score this game, even if you are Ex-Air Force Special Forces.

Summer is truly here at the club now. Today at gametime, the temperature hit 76degrees, in the range building, in the shade. 14 guns came out to enjoy the sunshine, and the shooting was about as hot as the temperatures. We shot the D series of clays arrays today, and Chuck Treat, our "Arrays Impressario" really outdid himself.

Round 1, "Grapefruits and Oranges".

This array featured 3 standard Green Clays, bordering one orange micro clay, with the usual black micro clay in the middle. This array definitely called for fire discipline and patience. The 3 "giant" green clays get the shooters relaxed, and they punch holes in them fairly easily. The shooters then realize, often too late, that the little bitty orange micro clay takes some serious aiming. If one succeeds in hitting those, then the shooter can acquire and engage the black micro in the middle. It calls for speed, but more importantly, accuracy.

Round 2, "Fewer Grapefruits, more oranges."

2 standard sized Green clay targets bordering 2 orange micro targets. Hidden in the middle is one black micro, smugly unconcerned about getting perforated. Does anyone see a trend starting here. It doesn't get any easier later in the match either.

Round 3, "More oranges, darn few Grapefruits."

If one can negotiate the three little bitty orange micros on the outside, one can engage the standard sized Green just outside of the black micro in the middle. So far, the order of acquiring the targets is fairly apparent, though not easy. The object of the game is to go fast enough to get there first, but carefully enough to be able to get there eventually.

Round 4, "Orange Grove"

Now its all micros, 4 orange ones on the outside, and a black one in the middle. Now we start to need a clear path to the black micro, one that doesn't require too much movement up and down, nor too much movement back and forth. One can either take the top two going outbound then drop down and take the bottom 2 enroute to the middle black micro, or vise versa. Either way, one needs a clear path to the black micro.

Round 5, " A larger Orange Grove, so just pick 5"

I don't know if it's fair to have to shoot fast, accurately, and still have to think during the string of fire, but that sure is what is required in round 5. First, the shooter picks which 5 targets gives him/her the route with the fewest course changes to the black objective micro, then he/she has to negotiate that path quickly and accurately. The thinking part is that one has to pick out just 4 orange micros, leaving the 5th shot for the black micro in the middle. (One should be so lucky!). Rather one takes the high road or the low road, he had better get there before his opponent, as there is only 1 black micro in the middle, and one needs to hit it first, or LOSE that string of fire. Y'all be real careful out there!!

At the end of regulation play we have 2 winners. Hal Hansen takes the Open Class Medallion (well ok, I just kept the one I thought I won last week :) )) with a score of 45, same as I actually got last week.

Jim Skedd won the Limited Class, with a Mark 3 Ruger this time. Is your Nighthawk at home resting today, Jim? Jim and his Ruger perforated 39 targets, so it was still a productive day, and his Nighthawk won't feel as overstuffed as usual tonight.

A couple of final notes from todays match. Many thanks to Jon Lagerquist for running the scoresheet and the microphone in Doug's absence. Jon and this reporter also covered for Chuck Nicodemus who stayed home sick today. I haven't heard that Chuck's condition caused him to feel akin to a pork chop, so stay in, stay quiet and recuperate quickly Chuck. Oh yeah Chuck, you owe Ken Bagley Sr. a medallion from last week's match. Next Sunday will do. Wherever Doug is today, have fun, drive safely, and don't bring any germs home from wherever you went. Tonight's weather was perfect, a clear blue sky, no wind and a balmy 64degrees. 29 guns came out to play in the summertime weather, and none were disappointed. First, thanks to all who pitched in and made the event go so well tonight. Thanks to Mathew Seagraves and OJ for setting up the stage. Thanks to Rebecca & Rob Potter for running the scoreboard, microphone and the firing line. Thanks to all those who stepped in and helped while Rob & Reba were shooting. With all this good help, we got in 5 rounds of shooting and our Sudden Death Finale. Round 4 was our mandatory reload round, and that exercise is a "work in progress" for many of us.
We pick up the action toward the end of the Sudden Death phase of our match tonight. Kiel Marvik was unopposed in the Junior Class, but shot very well indeed tonight, and let many of us know that he was here to PLAY!!
Leon Potter has retired with the Super Senior Class victory tonight. Well done, Leon. The final 3 for this evening's match are Rob Potter, James Austin, and Dan Moore. All three shooters are showing a lot of speed, accuracy, and most importantly of all, consistency. Finally, Rob Potter puts Dan on the trailer with the Senior Class ribbon safely tucked away. Well done, Dan. That leaves James with 2 numbers, to Rob Potter's 5. uh oh James, you have your work cut out for you tonight!!. James and Rob square off, and James evens things up just a bit with a victorious duel over Rob. James 2, Rob 4. Again to the firing line. Again the horn sounds, the guns bark, and James has evened up the score just a bit more. Now it's James 2, and Rob 3. The pressure is on both shooters for real, now.
Shooters Load and Make Ready!! Shooters Ready? Stand By!! The horn sounds, the guns bark and we are now even at 2 apiece. The gallery can feel the pressure clear to the back row. Let's try this again. Shooters Load and Make Ready!! Shooters Ready? Stand By!! At the sound of the horn James and Rob attack the plates, and folks! We have a brand new ballgame. James is on a tear, and has pulled ahead 2 numbers to Rob's 1. Wow!! One more time.
Shooters, Load and Make Ready!! Shooters Ready? Stand By!! James has come from behind to tie, then pull ahead by 1 number. The pressure was on him 5 to 2, and now it's on Rob 2 to 1. It's "6 for sure" in the form of a Smith & Wesson Revolver, against a "state of the art" incarnation of John Browning's craftsmanship, the 1911 pistol from Nighthawk Custom Guns. At the horn it's Smith & Wesson against Nighthawk Custom Guns, and this time, this time folks, it's Smith & Wesson for the win.

Well, there you have it folks. Competition at it's best. James Austin wins tonight's falling plate match, and Rob Potter wins tonight's Young Buck & Does Class. They join Kiel and Dan and Leon in the winner's circle, and look forward to a week of adoration by their awestruck fans. Well, ok, they get congratulated and invited back next week, at their own expense. Well, we're just a gun club, not American Idol. The prize automobiles and Hollywood contracts were last year, this year they get blue ribbons. And we'll see you all right here next week to see who gets the ribbons then. Take care all.

This match is dedicated to the memory of a friend and long-time clays match competitor, Lee Meyers 1924-2009, 85 years old.

The weather today was perfect. Lee would have wholeheartedly approved.

71degrees, in the range building, in the shade. Blue sky outside and no rain predicted for the foreseeable future. Perfect.

Thanks to Chuck Nicodemus for hosting our match, and to Chuck Treat, The Arrays Impressario, for designing the stages. We used Target Array Set C today, and it was challenging to the extreme. Thanks to Doug McLean for running and scoring the match. Even though this reporter won the Open Class, Doug swallowed hard and stayed to the end anyway. I think Doug had a good time anywayt today, in our beautiful weather. But with Doug, who can tell?

At the end of regulation play, we have 2 class winners. Hal Hansen took the honors in the Open Class with a score of 47. In the Limited Class, his predatory Nighthawk circling, circling, and then Pouncing!! was Rob Potter with a score of 42.

We had a smaller than usual entry today, it being Memorial Day Weekend. Let us all remember those who have served in our military and that made our country great.

Today is a day of rememberance. We remember our Veterans, and we remember Lee Meyers who just joined his wife in Paradise. Let us all join together and say "Welcome Home, Lee!!"

First things first; Thanks to the setup crew of Mathew & Wolfgang Seagraves and any & all who helped them. The stage was looking good and cooking, well before gametime. Thanks guys.

Thanks to George Flaherty for running the board and the mic in Reba's absence. George, ya done good and we all appreciate it. Thanks to all those that took a turn at running the line in Rob's absence. With the help of the match staff, our match officials, and the attention of the shooters, even with 29 shooters, we got in 4 rounds and a sudden death finale, and had time to spare, though not much. Thanks guys.

Do you folks remember what was going on May 18, 1980? 29 years ago, plus a day, Mt. St. Helens erupted and the fireworks from that event almost equaled the fireworks tonight at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club. Most of us would rather be shooting than watching mountains erupt, and we certainly got to see some great shooting tonight. It was clear, the clouds were breaking up as the night went on, it was cool, & with no rain. This bodes well for the approaching summer. 29 guns came out to enjoy the good weather, the competition, and camaraderie with fellow shooters, and we got an evening of shooting to remember.

As we enter the sudden death phase of the match, names and numbers start to tumble. Everyone gets another lease on the competition in sudden death, and as long as you keep winning, you keep shooting. After a few duels we join James and Ted Austin as they duel, and as if in a family fued, horns sound, guns bark and, at least this time, James Austin walks away the winner. Exit brother Ted, none the worse for wear, except maybe for his pride. At this point we are down to just a few guns, as the faster guns have started to dominate the ranks. We are down to James, Mark, Lee, George, OJ, Mathew & Loren. Out of 29 guns, we have 7 still standing. To dampen down the gunfight metaphore, I assure you all the rest are busily planning tactics to try and achieve success next week. No, no one gets "gunned down" at GHSC.

To continue, George and OJ duel, and the outcome is a perfect tie. On the reshoot, George gets there first. duel to George.

Mark duels with Matthew Seagraves, with Matthew winning. Loren and Mark duel, with Loren winning.George and Mathew Seagraves duel with Mathew winning. Not bad Matt, not many outran George tonight.

George and Mark duel with Mark winning this one, then James and Lee shoot to a tie. On the reshoot, Lee wins a close one. Mark duels with Loren, and Loren wins this one. Lee then puts Mathew on the trailer in a fast duel. Don't feel bad, Matt.

Lots of people had that trouble with Lee tonight. Now we are down to 3; George, Loren and Lee. George and Lee duel with George winning. George and Loren duel with Loren winning. George and Lee try it again, and George does it again. Then George comes right back against Lee with another close win. George then puts Loren on the trailer in a close duel, exit Loren.

Now George has 3 numbers to Lee's 1, but Lee gets it a little more even by edging George to get within 1 number. In the next duel George puts it away for the evening and for the match with a fast consistent string. Exit Lee, our Young Bucks & Does class winner.

OK folks, the weather forecast is for 10 days with no rain. Summer is here at GHSC, so come on out and shoot plates, both on Mondays at 5pm for our practices and at 6pm for our Tuesday matches.

We had 14 guns out to shoot our Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club Clays Match today. The shooting was hot, the target arrays were challenging, and almost eclipsing all that was our weather. Clear Blue skies, and a temperature of 74degrees!! In Washington State it is Spring. At Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club it is SUMMER!!
The target arrays matched the weather for color, and differed from the weather only in the intensity of the challenge, and the variety. It is this reporters pleasure to announce today that Chuck Treat, the creator and designer of our target arrays, has a new title. From now on, when discussing the GHSC Clays Match, Chuck is to be referred to as the "Impressario of the Arrays!!"
Chuck has designed a series of 8 sets of target arrays to be rotated each week. Today we were challenged by the second set of targets, Array Set B, and in 8 weeks you'll see this set of targets again. The trick will be to remember each set of arrays for 8 weeks and therefore be mentally prepared for that target set when it next appears. Or, another method would be to practice your fundamentals of shooting so that it doesn't matter what set of targets you face, you can meet their challenge. That would be a much better method.
Target array set B is in place, 14 shooters are at the gate, the flag is up! And they're Off!!

At the end of regulation we have a tie and a winner. In the Limited Class Tim Anable has the lead with a score of 35. Way to go Tim. In the Open Class we have a tie between Jay Schoonmaker and Ken Bagley Sr., both with a score of 45. Well Ladies and Gentlemen, you know what's coming up next. Shootoff!!!! Jay Schoonmaker has hit 3 of the clays and is our winner for this week. Jay's final score: 45 + 3 and along with the winner's medallion, Jay has bragging rights for an entire week. Well done Jay.

It was a dark and rainy night, at least until 37 guns gathered to shoot our Tuesday evening plate match. Then, as if by divine intervention, the skies dried, the range was blessed with a lot of highly filtered sunlight, and even the 54degree temperature warmed a bit, especially after the heaters were turned on. We had 37 guns come out to shoot plates, rain or shine, and we all got shined on for our effort.
Many thanks to Mathew Seagraves and Mark (OJ) Kimura for coming out early and setting up the stage. Thanks to George Flaherty for running the scoreboard and the microphone, giving Rebecca Potter a well-deserved break from her scorekeeping duties. Her esteemed spouse, Rob, took the hint and also a break from running the line tonight. Many thanks to everyone who stepped into his place of business and made our match run smoothly. Even with 37 guns, we got in 4 rounds and a sudden death finale. Many thanks to all the shooters who pitched in to help.
After an evening of torrid competition, it came down to Rob Potter, George Flaherty, Mark Wuesthoff, and Lee Lewis. We join the action as Lee Lewis and Rob Potter square off and duel, with Lee Lewis taking the victory. Mark Wuesthoff and Rob follow with a fast duel, victory to Mark Wuesthoff. Lee and George Flaherty duel with Lee winning this one too. Rob and Mark duel with Rob getting there first, victory to Rob, the trailer for Mark, our Senior Class victor. This leaves Rob with 2 numbers, to Lees 1 and folks, it's showtime. Shooters, load and make ready. Shooters ready? Stand By!! At the horn Rob and Lee go for it. The plates get hammered, the smoke clears, and we have a winner. Rob Potters plates fell just a bit faster than Lees, so Rob is our Match winner. Lee Lewis gleefully settles for our Young Bucks and Does Class win. George Flaherty takes the Super Senior Class victory, and all the shooters entered take note of what it takes to win a class at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club.
Well folks, remember the Monday evening plate practices at 5pm. Practice lasts till 7pm, we have both racks and a heater set up, and most shooters who come out to practice find they have more time than ammo by the end of the practice session. Come on out and get a running start for next Tuesday. And remember, Sundays at 4pm right here at GHSC for our Clays Match.

Well, Happy Mother's Day, and a beautiful Spring Day it is. No heaters necessary today, with a lightly clouded blue sky and a temperature of 64degrees. Along with spring flowers, the target arrays blossemed forth also; colorful, bright and challenging.

At the end of regulation play we have a tie and a winner. In the Limited Class, leading 1/2 the field, is Jim Skedd with a score of 35. In the Open Class, we have a tie between Mathew Reid and Ken Bagley Sr., both with a score of 44. Folks, we are going to have a shootoff.

One target frame back to 44 feet, and it's all black micros now. Looks like we'll use the same array as for stage 5, Broken Arrow, but all black minis at 44 feet, now this is a challenge worthy of our Sunday Clays Shooters. Doug McLean at the scoretable calls the action.

Where normally there would be a hail of bullets, today, with this array of clay targets, it feels sort of "Careful" out there.
Finally 10 shots are away, and we have a winner. Mathew Reid has hit 3 of the targets, and is today's winner. Mathew has a score now of 44 + 3, and bragging rights for a whole week.
Next week, the challenges will be 2. 1) Can Mathew come back and do it again, after he has been in everyone's sights for a week? And 2) Can Chucks, Treat and Nicodemus, come up with even more varied and challenging target arrays. I'm not sure which challenge will be more difficult. Join me right here next Sunday afternoon at 4pm and we'll all find out together. No pressure Mathew or Chuck & Chuck. It'll be just as easy next week as it was this week. We actually had good weather for our match tonight. It was a comfortable (with all the heaters on) 52degrees with scattered clouds and a lot of blue sky showing. Both of the umbrellas were up tonight, in anticipation of a lot of rain, but the heavens must have run out of water, as it was wet in surrounding areas, but at GHSC it was bright and dry.
Thanks to Mathew, Wolfgang, and OJ for showing up early and setting up the stage. Thanks to Reba for running the board and the microphone, and thanks to George Flaherty for coming by, albeit too late to shoot, but staying and running the line. This gave Rob Potter an evening to "play" instead of being "on duty" all evening. Thanks also to Wolfgang and Mathew Seagraves for having our bonfire going, giving more heat for the shooters, and adding no end of ambiance to our match.
Even with 29 guns, due to the efficiency and skill of the match staff, we still got in 5 rounds of regulation shooting and a sudden death finale. With all that action tonight, we finished up with time to spare. Thanks to the match staff, and well done. During the course of the match we have a couple of class winners. Early on, Leon Potter won the Super Senior Class. Then, sometime later Reba emerged victorious in the Senior Class. Wolfgang Seagraves was uncontested in the Junior Class tonight, and shot well enough to be a factor during the early shootoffs. Well done, class winners. At the end of the sudden death finale, we have 3 guns still standing: To no one's surprise they are Rob Potter with 4 numbers on the board, James Austin with 6 numbers up, and OJ Kimura with 1 number. OJ and James Austin square off the begin the finale, and James takes a fast duel over OJ, putting OJ on the trailer for the evening. A lot of people had that problem tonight, OJ.
Now it James Austin with 6 numbers, and Rob Potter with 4 numbers. James and Rob square off and James get the first win. Rob is down to 3 numbers. James and Rob duel again, and this time it's Rob with the win. James 5, Rob 3. James and Rob go for it at the starter's horn for the 3rd duel and this time it's James, and Rob is down to 2 numbers. Rob gets a little payback next time and now it's James with 4 numbers and Rob with 2. Not to be outdone, James takes a flaming duel with Rob, the time for which must have been in the 2second bracket. Wow! James 4, Rob 1. Uh oh. But wait, in the next duel Rob comes back strong, and now it's Rob with 1, and James is down to 3. Can you feel the pressure, people? Finally, one more time. Shooters, Load and Make Ready! Shooters Ready? Stand by! At the horn James and Rob hammer the plates, and we have a winner!! James Austin takes one more duel for the Match win this evening. Rob Potter puts his Nighthawk to Bed with Rebas and Leons and takes home the class win for the Young Bucks and Does Class. The Potter family's trio of Nighthawks have acuitted themselves well tonight. 3 Nighthawks, 3 class wins. And James Austin and his Smith & Wesson wheelgun reigns supreme for another week.
Folks, this is handgun competition at it's best. Come on out to the plates practices on Monday evenings at 5pm and practice, practice, practice. And don't forget the Clays Match on Sunday afternoons at 4pm. It's a different game, but no less challenging, and no less fun.
