April 28th, 2009 Plate Match Report

37 shooters tonight -- Match won by Rob Potter

2 Junior Shooters - class won by Wolfgang Seagraves
22 Young Bucks & Does - Class won by Jeff Olson
7 Senior Shooters - Class won by Mark Wuesthoff
6 Super Senior Shooters - Class won by George Flaherty

The weather for tonight's match started off a little overcast & cool. We turned on a couple of heaters, but it was generally pretty nice. Mathew Seagraves & son Wolfgang, after arriving early & setting up the stage, fired up their BBQ and supplied everyone with BBQ hot dogs & hamburgers during the match. Well Mathew & Wolfgang, you still have to win the match on the firing line, but you certainly won a place in everyone's heart & tummy this evening.
Talk about dedication, Rob Potter had knee surgery again late last week, and he and wife Reba were at the match tonight and had firm control of the firing line and the scoretable. In addition to those superlative efforts, they also had their Nighthawks smoking. As events developed, Rob, sore knee & all, had the firing line, and his Nighthawk all under firm control.
We had several new shooters attend our match this evening. Several of the veterans of the plate matches at the Bullseye Range in Tacoma found their way to the GHSC Tuesday evening matches, and shot very very well. Experience will tell, and I believe these shooters raised the bar for everyone. Welcome gents, hope to see you all each week. Don't forget our Monday evening plate match practices held each Monday evening here at the range at 5pm. It'll cost you $5.00 to shoot from 5pm to 7pm, we have both plate racks set up, and we don't care if you bring a different gun to the line each time you shoot. Mondays are for experimenting and practicing. Come on out and play Mondays, and get warmed up for a running start for the Tuesday matches.
With our well-oiled match staff showing off their expertise, we got in 4 rounds of shooting & a sudden death finale, even with 37 guns entered. We pick up the match in progress as Rob Potter puts this reporter on the trailer for the evening. Exit Hal.
George & Lee duel, with George winning this one. Reba & Mark, 2 of our Senior Class Shooters, duel with Mark outrunning Reba. Mark then duels with James, with James winning, and then Rob beats up on Mark, outrunning him to the wire. George & Jeff duel with George winning, followed by James & Rob dueling, with James getting there first. James then duels with George, narrowly outrunning him this time.
It's way overcast now, with a lot of cumulus clouds having accumulated while we were concentrating so hard on our shooting.
As happens with cumulus clouds, a very light, misty drizzle slowly starts, causes some worried glances skyward. Nothing to worry about yet though.
We carry on with Mark barely getting by Rob, then Rob coming back strong against Jeff for a win. George and Rob duel with Rob winning, followed by Mark and Jeff dueling, with Jeff winning. George and James duel with James winning, and Mark and George duel with Mark winning. Rob duels with Jeff, and Rob wins this one. James and Mark duel with James winning, and folks, we are getting close. At this point we have Jeff, Rob, and James, each with one number left on the board.
Rob ends James bid for victory, exit James. Rob & Jeff duel with Rob winning, and folks, that's all she wrote!.
Our match winner this evening is Rob Potter, with Jeff Olson winning the Young Bucks & Does Class. Mark Wuesthoff wins the Senior Class and Wolfgang Seagraves wins the Junior Class.
Jeff Olson: due to an administrative error tonight, MINE, "I owe you a Young Bucks & Does Class ribbon." I mistakenly gave it to the wrong guy, but I'll get it to you ASAP.
At this point all the shooters are taking down the stage, this reporter is running around passing out ribbons, sometimes even to the right people, and........THE SKIES OPEN UP WITH THE RAIN OF NOAH!! It was mentioned earlier that we were going to drive home in the rain, and so we did. Well, the forecast is for better weather tomorrow, so we'll see. Either way, we'll see you here next week and we'll play the game again. See you then.

April 26, 2009 Clays Match Report

18 Guns Entered
Class won by Score
7 open Guns Chuck Treat 48

11 Limited Guns Dan Moore 43

Well, good afternoon sports fans. Welcome to the Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club weekly Sunday afternoon clays match.
We have 18 guns entered today, of which 11 are in the Limited Class, and 7 are in the Open Class. We want to start off by thanking Chuck Nicodemus for hosting the match, and Doug McLean for running the scoresheet and the microphone. We also want to thank Chuck Treat for designing the target arrays which are so colorful and such a challenge to master. The difficulty of the arrays can be illustrated in just one number: Of 18 guns entered, only 6 managed to hit 40 or more of the clay targets during the match. Well done Chuck, Chuck, & Doug. This match is sure fun, and it is a challenge every single week. Looking at the target arrays for 5 rounds, I think it is best to show rather than try to describe the arrays. At the end of regulation play, we have 2 winners.

In the Open Class, with high score for the match at 48 is: Chuck Treat

In the Limited Class, with a score of 43, is: Dan Moore

Good shooting Chuck and Dan, and good shooting to the entire field. On this beautiful, clear sunny afternoon what better is there to do than come out to GHSC and shoot at the clays. Don't forget the plate practices on Mondays at 5pm, and the plate matches on Tuesdays at 6pm. And, don't forget to be right here next Sunday afternoon at 4pm for another GHSC Clays Match. See you then.

April 22, 2009 Plate Match Report

26 Guns Entered Tonight
-0- Juniors
12 Young Bucks & Does - Class won by James Austin
7 Seniors - Class won by Mark Wuesthoff
7 Super Seniors - Class won by Hal Hansen

It's summertime, by all appearances. 70 degrees @ gametime and no heaters were required. Very few jackets either. It was shirtsleeves everywhere tonight and it felt GREAT!! We had 4 new shooters tonight and a couple we haven't seen for awhile. We at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club hope you all enjoyed the match and will make it a regular Tuesday evening event on your calendar. Thanks to Mathew Seagraves and OJ and all those who came early and set up the stage tonight. Many thanks to Reba Potter for running the microphone and the scoreboard. Many thanks to OJ, George and all those who stepped in when needed to make the evening go as smoothly as warm oil. With the expertise of the match staff, we got in 5 rounds, a sudden death finale, and even with 26 guns, we had plenty of time to spare. When you're good, you're very good.
George put this reporter on the trailer, and at this point it's down to Reba, Mark, George, James & Mike. Reba & Mark duel with Mark winning. Then it's James and George who shoot to a tie. A reshoot is called, and this time it's James winning. Mike and James duel with Mike winning, then George outruns Mark to take that duel. James and Mike duel with James winning, exit Mike. Congrats Mike on a great 1st plate match. James and George duel with James winning, and George puts Reba on the trailer for the evening with a very, very fast run.
Now it's down to George Flaherty, James Austin & Mark Wuesthoff. James and George have a bunch of numbers on the board. Mark has 1. This may take awhile. George starts the gunfight by outrunning James, but James comes right back at George. George and Mark duel, with George winning, exit Mark, our Senior Class winner tonight. Now it's James with 2 numbers and George with 3. After a fast duel won by George, James is down to 1 to George's 3. James evens the odds a little by outgunning George on the replay, and now James has 1 number to George's 2. Shooters, load and make ready!! Shooters Ready? Stand by!!
At the horn James and George hammer the plates, and we have a match winner. George Flaherty outruns James Austin for the string and the match win. By virtue of George, our Super Senior representative winning the match, our Super Senior Class is claimed by Hal Hansen. Hey, this reporter will take it any way he can get it,....If & when he can get it.
Congratulations on some great shooting, to our entire field. Word from Mathew Seagraves is that he plans on running the BBQ next week, so food is going to be available. Good shooting, good food......Sports Fans, it doesn't get any better than this. See you all next week. Bring a good appetite, a fast gun, and lots and lots of heart and desire. See you then.

April 19, 2009 Clays Match Report

16 Guns entered today
9 in the Open Class - Won by Jay Schoonmaker with a score of 47
7 in the Limited Class - Won by Jim Skedd with a score of 37

It was a warm sunny clear day, the temperature resting at 70 degrees in the range today. No heaters, very few jackets, it appears spring may have actually arrived. Well, this week's version of it anyway. 16 Guns turned out to enjoy the weather and the competition, and to see what the folks who design the target arrays could come up with today. No one was disappointed, only well challenged to meet the challenge, and excel at it. Many thanks to Chuck Nicodemus and Doug McLean hosting and running the match, and to whoever was the sadistic designer of the target arrays.

As always, irregardless of the array, the trick is to find the route through them that requires the least movement and the most speed. At the end of regulation play, we have a couple of winners. In the Open Class, with a score of 47, is Jay Schoonmaker. Jay and his scoped .22 fairly ran through these patterns, and did it accurately and well. Good Shooting Jay.
In the Limited Class, Jim Skedd and his .45ACP Nighthawk showed the way. Good shooting Jim, your Nighthawk was really on today. Jim's score of 37 gives one an idea of the difficulty of this game.

So, we go on our way for another week. Don't forget the Plate Practices on Monday Nights @ 5:00pm. Then there are the weekly Plate Matches at 6:00pm on Tuesdays, and now we have the Defensive Shotgun Match held each Sunday at 12:00pm. Plenty of competition is available at Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club if you want to shoot fast!!

We leave you today with the endearing words of our clays match announcer and scorekeeper, Doug McLean. One can almost hear his smooth voice purring the words over the microphone: "GET OFF MY RANGE!!"

4/15/09 Plate Match Report

4/14/09 Plate Match Report

27 Guns entered tonight. Match won by James Austin
1 Junior gun - Kiel Marvik uncontested
14 Young Bucks & Does - Class won by Mark Kimura
10 Senior Guns - Class won by Mark Wuesthoff
2 Super Senior Guns, both Hal Hansen, uncontested

It was a clear, cool evening, 48degrees and the heaters were all on again. In addition to the heaters, some really hot shooting, typical camaradarie and.....and........Mathew Seagraves' BBQ kept the shooters toasty warm, well fed, and comfortable.
Now, in addition to getting to the range early, and with Mark kimura's help, setting up the stage for the match, Mathew brought his own food to BBQ. Mark gave everyone who wanted a hamburger all they wanted, for free, and folks, let me tell you: Mathew Seagraves knows how to BBQ hamburgers. YUMMMMMM:)
We pick up the action toward the end of the match, Ted and Rob having conspired to put this reporter on the trailer. Well, it was fun while it lasted, and it gave me more time to eat hamburgers:) but first let me give thanks to Rob & Reba for running the line and scoreboard, and thanks to all the shooters who jumped in to help them out when they were shooting. With the help of everyone we got in 5 rounds of shooting with a sudden death finale, and it was FUN!!
After a night's intense shooting, the final 3 are James Austin, with 3 numbers up, Rob Potter with 1number up, and Mark Kimura with 2 numbers up. The flag is up!, and they're off. OJ and James duel with James winning. Then James puts Rob on the trailer with a fast run, and it's OJ and James Austin left standing.

Shooters Ready? Stand By! At the horn they hammer the plates, the plates fall, and James' plate fall just a little faster.
String, Class and match to James Austin! OJ wins the Young Bucks & Does Class
and Mark Wuesthoff wins the Seniors Class.
We'll all see you here next week, bring your pet handgun "fluffy", a sufficient supply of ammunition, the entry fee, and a strong desire for fast action. See you all then.

April 7, 2009 Plate Match Report

37 Guns Entered Match won by James Austin April 7, 2009

2 Junior guns - Class won by Kiel Marvik

18 Young Bucks & Does - Class won by Rob Potter

12 Seniors - Class won by Rebecca Potter

5 Super Seniors - Class won by George Flaherty

It was a beautiful evening for a plate match. It was warm, no heaters, few jackets or sweaters, and clear skies. We sure do hope this weather lasts. Thanks as always to Wolfgang and Mathew Seagraves, OJ, and others who set up the stage tonight. Thanks to Rob and Reba Potter for running the table, with help during the night from several of the shooters.
As a service those who shoot the match, and spread expended brass all over the tarp, tonight we usher in the era of "Brass sorted while you wait". From tonight forward, just leave your brass on the tarp until after the end of the match we'll sort and bag the brass and try to get an equal amount to all who shot it and want it. Try not to take more than you shot and this should make it easier and more economical to play this game. For anyone who shoots but doesn't yet reload, it's not to early to start saving brass. One day, if you play this game for very long, you are going to want to start reloading just as a matter of economy. Start to save your brass now.
We had a great crowd of 37 guns tonight, another sure sign summer is approaching. We didn't need the heaters, but we all did enjoy our bonfire. There was talk tonight about having a BBQ after the matches. Now, that would be "eating out" at it's best. this reporter would like to get some input on that. Would it be a good idea, and would it be fun? Remember, summers coming.
To start our rundown of the finals tonight, Note that Kiel Marvik outlasted Wolfgang to take the Junior Class Ribbon.
Due to the efficiency of the match crew tonight, even with 37 guns, we got in 4 rounds of shooting and a Sudden Death Finale. We pick up the action as James gets by this reporter in a fast duel. Well, at least James was fast. Rob then proves that fast sometimes isn't fast enough as he gets by James, albeit barely. Rob then proves it wasn't luck by putting this reporter on the trailer. Rob is just like that. Rob continues his winning ways by outrunning George Flaherty, only to get outrun by James in a speedy rematch.
Jon Stein duels with Reba with Reba winning, exit to Jon Stein. That duel isfollowed by James getting some payback while outrunning Rob. George duels with Reba and outruns her, and then Rob and James duel again, this time with Rob winning. At this point there are 4 shooters remaining in this gunfight, Rob, James, Reba and George. Rob and James duel with James winning this one, then George carries the Super Senior Class hopes forward by beating James. Rob gets by Reba in a fast duel, so exit to Reba, our Senior Class winner tonight. Congratulations Reba, so who buys dinner tonight?
James and Rob duel with James winning. Exit Rob, our Young Bucks and Does Class winner. Folks, we are getting down to it. George has 1 number on the board to James' 2, and in the next duel George evens the odds by beating James in a squeaker. For all the marbles, Shooters, load and make ready! Shooters ready? Standby! At the horn George and James hammer the plates, they all fall, and James' plates get there first. Winner of the string, the class and the match - James Austin. Exit to George Flaherty, our Super Senior Class winner tonight. Good shooting James, and good shooting and great competition to the entire 37 gun field. We'll see you all right here next week, and we'll see who the Top Gun is then. In the meantime, don't forget the plate practices on Monday evenings at 5pm. $5.00 flat fee to practice and we don't care if you bring a different gun to the line every time you shoot. It's a great way to get warmed up for Tuesday evenings. See you all next week.
Happy Easter.

April 5, 2009 Clays Match Report

18 guns entered today
Open Class entries - 10, Class won by Ken Bagley Sr. Score - 48
Limited entries - 8, Class won by Mark Wuesthoff - 38

SPRING MAY FINALLY BE HERE! It was a beautiful day for a clays match, 66degrees at gametime and warm, clear and no heaters necessary today. It's possible we have successfully endured the ravages of winter. 18 guns came out to enjoy our stellar weather today, and to meet head-on the challenges put forth by Chuck Nicodemus and the clays crew. Chuck Treat and OJ, acting in concert with Chuck Nicodemus really outdid themselves in their efforts to challenge the shooters. Gents, you did a good job of it today too. Thanks as always to Chuck Nicodemus for hosting the match, and to Doug Mclean for running the microphone, the scoresheets, and, and, uh, motivating the shooters. Yeah, motivating..........
There was another new twist in the target arrays today. Instead of 4 targets of varying colors and sizes surrounding the center objective target, today there were 5. The job of the shooters was to pick any 4 and hit them, then move on to the center target and hit it. For shooters used to hitting 4 and then 1, it was natural to hit the entire array on either side of the center target, and suddenly, "uh oh, I don't have another round to hit the center one. oops!!" Well, in the parlance of USPSA/IPSC, one of the targets is a No-Shoot, and you get to pick which one. The shooter plans a route through the array that deliverers him or her to the center target with a minimum of movement, and a maximum of speed.
Round 1 was a great example, and an excellent gateway to today's challenges.

Round 2 saw all orange micros surrounding a black micro

Think you are starting to see a trend? Well..................

Round 3

Tread carefully, and be sure which black clay you are hitting. Remember, until you have broken 4 outside targets, the center black micro is a NO-SHOOT!. Don't hit the wrong one early.

Round 4 A lot of really HUGE targets, So Shoot Really Fast!! uh huh.........

Round number 5 WHAAAATTTTTT??????????!!!!!!!!!

Same deal, pick any 4 on each side, then pick one of the middle micros, and good luck. The trick is still the same, pick your way through the array with the least possible movement and the most possible speed. Ya'all be real careful now............
At the end of regulation play we have a couple of winners. In the open Class Ken Bagley Sr. edged this reporter by one clay target to win with a score of 48. Shooting a score of 47 and getting beat! Humbug!
In the Limited Class Mark Wuesthoff and his Smith & Wesson revolver had the high score with 38. Good shooting Mark. And good shooting everyone who played the game today. The arrays were varied and challenging, the competition was intense, and a note of encouragement: IT DOESN'T GET ANY EASIER!!

March 31, 2009 Plate Match Report

30 Guns Entered Tonight
Class Won By
2 Juniors Wolfgang Seagraves
14 Young Bucks & Does Mark (OJ) Kimura
10 Seniors Mark Wuesthoff
4 Super Seniors Hal Hansen
It's the last day of March and it's only 51 degrees. We had all the heaters on, and a bonfire and the air was still chilled. Fortunately, the intensity of the shooting, along with the heaters, kept everyone warm and comfy.
Many thanks to OJ Kimura for setting up the stage tonight. Mathew and Wolfgang Seagraves were out buying 16year old Wolfgang a car of his very own, specifically a pickup truck. Welcome to the highways of America Wolfgang. Keep it in mind son, when you drive a vehicle on the highway, you are taking an adult responsibility. It's a large responsibility and it's up to you to prove you are man enough to handle it. Fortunately, Mathew and Wolfgang did get to the match on time, albeit barely. I guess Wolfgang must have been doing the driving.
Tonight was Wolfgang's night. In addition to his first car, Wolfgang shot well enough to win the Junior Class ribbon tonight.
Congratulations all the way around Wolfgang.
We pick up the action as Ted and Rob duel, with Ted winning this one. Then, Mark Wuesthoff and this reporter duel, with Mark winning, putting this reporter on the trailer. One consolation, while sitting on the trailer, I'm holding the Super Senior Class ribbon.
Rob and Ted then have a rematch, with Rob winning this time. Mark W. and Rob then go at it with Rob getting this one done first. OJ and Jim Skedd duel, with Jim winning. Then Mark and OJ duel with Mark W. winning. Mark and Rob duel with Mark winning, and then Jim and OJ duel with Jim winning, exit OJ, our Young Bucks and Does class winner tonight. Rob then puts the binders on Jim's night by edging him in a duel, exit Jim Skedd.
At this point we have Mark Wuesthoff & Rob Potter left standing to decide the match winner for the week. Rob has 2 numbers on the board to Mark's 1. Shooters load and make ready! Stand by!! At the horn Rob and Mark hammer the plates and both use up their 6 rounds and go for the reload. Rob gets the reload done 1st and drops the last of his plates first for the win.
Rob has never learned how to just grab the ribbon and run, and when Mark suggests "just one more time" Rob buys in.
OK, just one more time......Shooters Load and make ready! Shooters ready? Stand By!! At the horn they go for it "just one more time"..... They both use up their 6 rounds, go for the reload, and in almost a carbon copy of the last duel, Rob gets the reload done first, drops the last of his plates first, and this time does indeed take the ribbon and run.
Well Mark, winning the Senior Class is pretty good. 8 other guns would like to have won it. Take the ribbon and go home and practice reloading all week long.
Thanks to Rob and Rebecca Potter for running the line and the scoreboard. Thanks to all those that stepped in to help when Rob and Reba were shooting. With their expertise we got in 5 rounds of shooting with a Sudden Death Finale, and still had time left over, even with Rob's and Mark's "one more time" duel. Well done folks.
This reporter has a final thought to Wolfgang, who is doubtless sleeping in his new truck as you read this.....
Wolfgang, always drive carefully and thoughtfully. We all want to shoot with you, not read about you.
Congratulations Wolfgang Seagraves.
Hal
